IRON MAN (2008)

I don't think I can improve on captaino's review: "an entertaining piece of froth, btw, highlighted by some snappy line readings." But I can elaborate it, which is not the same thing. I never liked the comic book character of Iron Man. Iron Man is Tony Stark, millionaire industrialist weapons manufacturer (upgraded to billionaire probably sometime in ( Read more... )

I always enjoy your reviews!

Re weapons: Classically, Iron Man uses repulsor rays that shoot out of his gauntlets, not guns / missiles. 'Cuz energy rays / force beams are understood to be a more heroic type of weapon than guns or missiles.

Re Iron Man / Tony Stark's political stance: The character was modeled on Howard Hughes, so it shouldn't surprise anyone if he gets a bit more... eccentric... with age. This superhero really resonates with the atmosphere of the times. Make of that what you will.

And I am so looking forward to the Mighty Thor movie. I wonder if they're going to use the "Ultimates" take on the character, in which Thor is an Earth-First defender type guy, confronting whaling vessels and whatnot.

Yeah, I know about the repulsor rays, but metaphorically, isn't the costume basically a gun? They call him Bullet-head, after all.

True. Iron Man is all about his armor, unlike Batman or Dr. Doom, who tend to create a vast array of gadgets, many of them not attached to their persons. :-)

I thought this webcomic had a very appropriate "take" on the Iron Man movie. :-)

BWAHAHAHAHAHA!

Interestingly enough, in the earliest Tales of Suspense Iron Man comics, when his costume was very bulky and looked more a '50s robot than a missile or handgun or corvette, they don't talk about repulsor rays. Everything is transistor powered, and I don't think Iron Man ever shoots anything at anybody, relying on far goofier gadgets instead. I've just read the first ten issues, up through TOS #49 (Next issue: the introduction of The Mandarin! The awesome power he possesses matches the evil in his heart!). So it's fair to say that the character has evolved quite a bit over time.

Can he see, or is he blind? saint_mark May 23 2008, 23:12:13 UTC
One of the biggest reasons for Iron Man's success: a theme song that everyone knows, kicks ass, and isn't forced.

This is also the reason they need to get to work on that Sandman movie.

I'm sort of surprised Iron Man is the one to kick out the second highest IMDb rated comic book movie (behind Batman Begins).

Our school talent show (that I was supposed to sing in) ended up getting postponed several times before getting canceled. Our class has become sort of dysfunctional in its second year.

I expect to stay in Irvine until the beginning of September. My classes responsibilities are basically over by June 4 so you and Jim should head down this summer.
