I toss and turn all night partly because of insomnia, partly because I can never get comfortable anyway. I used to have less trouble sleeping on a waterbed because it mouklded to my body but I don't think that's an option for you.

Have you tried a couple of pillows in lesser heights down your back? Like an angled type of thing?

Poor you. I have bouts of insomnia, and the body/joints definitely does have trouble getting comfortable at times. My main two positions work the majority of the time. Though I'm usually lying on my hands, which probably isn't a great idea with the circulation/arthritis.

Supporting your side, or actually under you? I seem to recall I tried a pillow behind my back once (while I was sleeping on my side) when my back/hips were mucking up. Pretty sure I threw it out as I felt confined.

Why is sleep so difficult? I do fall asleep really easily in the bath...

I kind of mean as a gently rising angle under your body. Lying on your back with pillows getting higher as they go up to your head. You know those electic beds for elderly people that can be adjusted to different angles? That but with pillows. Make sense? I always do that when I have a cold because I choke when I lie flat.

Oh, I'm with you. We do something like that, usually put a pillow under the top end of the mattress, so the top of the mattress is raised. Just haven't been bothered this time.

Hadn't thought of that. Though I'm only in a single bed. And I'm pretty sure that I once had a pillow supporting my back when it was mucking up, and I threw it out because I was feeling confined :\
