It's been a long time since I did a movie review and I've certainly got a lot of half-written reviews on the back burner that I'm going to be getting to this summer. But as long as I have it written, here's a review of a movie we saw in theaters just last night.

Star Trek Into Darkness [2013]. Kirk, Spock, and the rest of the Starship Enterprise ( Read more... )

I liked the movie a lot and I'm tempted to watch it in the theaters again. What I didn't like about the movie was the extremely long action scene at the end. BIG SPOILER ALERT!!!!( I would have preferred that Khan wouldn't survive the explosions on his ship and have that ridiculous Spock-Khan fight across the city. I might have even avoided Kirk dying, but I guess that bit was worth it. One problem to avoiding the Spock-Khan fight would be that they need Khan alive to save Kirk. However in the script they could have just added more blood on the medical center, since they did get some of Khan's blood when Khan had a physical. The extra 10 minutes of action was unnecessary to me and it soured the movie for me.

I asked Christian at the end of the movie, just what exactly was Khan planning to do at the end of the film? His ship didn't quite crash into Starfleet Academy (though it caused tons of damage) and he's killed off the top of the hierarchy, so what was he so determined to do at the Academy? That final chase also seemed to me like an unnecessary prolongation of the story.
