cooking shows

We watched three shows on the Food Network during Christian's visit to the doctor's office. Since we watch TV so rarely, so many "normal" things end up looking so foreign and it's almost an anthropological experience. It also reaffirms our judgment that we're not missing much by not having a TV. And let me complain: why do you have a TV in a ( Read more... )

I've seen chorizo in mussels at a number of restaurants! Both are in the paellas I grew up with.

PS "And let me complain..." OH PAUL

This is not slices of the dried Spanish chorizo, which I've also seen in paellas with mussels. This was Mexican chorizo, cut out of the casing and floating loosely along with steamed mussels in the mussel broth.

Sometimes there's so much to complain about in the world, I feel like I can't take it, and my heart is just going to cave in.

Oh! Hmm. Yeah, that I find slightly questionable, but I guess it probably isn't bad.

American Beauty references are what I post to twitter when I can't think of anything to say :D

I haven't tried with mussels, but we often make a highly-spiced dish with clams, garbanzos, and sausage, and the clams are in no way overpowered.

forgive me, but I always was under the impression that you're vegetarian. Is that not true?

That sounds like a good mix to me, but Christian doesn't really like clams so we probably wouldn't be making it.

I was mostly veggie/vegan in college ("mostly" because I would eat fish when visiting family), and my first two years at Berkeley my partner and I were veggie+fish. But these days we're omnivores, although we make a concerted effort to get all of our food at farmers' markets, and I basically never buy supermarket meat unless I have some reason to believe it's good. But Farmers' Market meat vendors here are awesome!

We would like to try to get most of our stuff from the farmer's market, but they sort of suck in Connecticut. We were really spoiled in France. It's just called "the market" there and it's the size of 2 city blocks (and happens 3x a week). There were about 10 different farmer's markets in the same city too, so there were always good options.

That said, there is a good local meat vendor here too. They specialize in goat meat and it's really fantastic.

After your description of the first cook, I can't wait to hear your report on Paula Deen.

Christian and I are not afraid to use butter or oil when we cook. It does add "goodness". But when your dish is 80% fat to make a vegetable palatable, it's time to reconsider what you're calling food.
