We went to our farmer's market for the second time today. We spent $50 between us and yet when we came home, we couldn't believe how little it had bought us. 50€ in France would have been three bulging sacks of groceries from the market; here it's just one ( Read more... )

Hey! I'm not simply saying life is better in France. For comparison, I mentioned the roadside stand in Western NY, which was great in what it provided and in its prices. It's just that in the cities, "farmer's markets" are things that eco-yuppies engage in. You walk through ours in New Haven and don't get the sense of people buying their groceries for the next few days (like they do in France), but rather everybody is windowshopping, inquiring and basking in their common organic purity.
