PBS shows a program thats well known as "Antiques Roadshow", safe bet you've caught a show. Not a bad program, sometimes full of info, sometimes fun to watch somebodies 'treasure' be a worthless piece of crap, and shocked that something simple is uber rare ( Read more... )

Even Nova can be pretty slanted towards the left... although since a lot of Nova's programs are actually either co-productions with the BBC series Horizon, or are documentaries acquired from other non-US sources with the narration re-voiced for American audiences, I suppose that's not surprising.

Thank you Jim...

You just re-affirmed one of my most cynical observations about the average human. Essentially, most people are basically dishonest, and are out to screw you, if given half a chance.
Likewise, everybody has a scam, and wants something for nothing.

It's the same level and type of cynicism and pessimism that filled Steinbeck's book "The Pearl".

Specifically, the point in the story, where he realised that nobody was going to treat him fairly. No matter what happened, he was going to be screwed out of the pearl, and the only question was whether or not he and his wife would be killed in the bargain. So, the only thing he could do was simply toss it back in the ocean.

I felt really bad until I eventually learned about and read "Might is Right" by Ragnar Redbeard. :P
