It’s one of those nights. Again. Kris hears the front door open and keys dropping into the bowl on the side table. Soft footsteps up the staircase, and finally, the slow creak of the door opening. He doesn’t have to look at the clock to know that it’s 2am. He’s been waiting for Adam to come home. Still, Kris is surprised. Adam hasn’t been this early in a while.

It’s been this way for weeks. Adam coming home in the middle of the night, distant, alcohol on his breath. Kris has pretended to be asleep every single time. Tonight feels different for some reason. He almost wants to give up the pretense and ask why Adam is home so early, but he holds back. He hates pushing Adam and knows that if he does, it’s going to strain things more.

Kris feels the bed dip next to him, hears a sigh as Adam sits on the edge of the mattress and Kris can see it in his mind, the way Adam’s got his eyes shut, a pained expression on his face. Kris wonders if this is it, if Adam’s finally burning out like everyone said he would.

He has his back to Adam and he opens his eyes, staring ahead into the darkness. It makes him feel uneasy, staring into the openness, so he shuts his eyes again. The bed shifts, Adam taking off his boots, heading into the bathroom to wash up. Kris hears the light switch flick, squeezes his eyes against the dim light he can feel around him coming from the crack under the door in the bathroom.

Kris almost drifts off to sleep until the bed dips again and he feels Adam climb under the covers. Unexpectedly, Kris feels a tentative arm snake around his waist and he stiffens, making Adam pull back immediately.

“I thought you were asleep,” Adam whispers into the silence. Kris can hear the fear in his voice and his heart drops. He turns slowly until he’s facing Adam and he can just barely see the outline of his features, eyes adjusted to the darkness.

“I’m sorry,” Adam whispers again when Kris doesn’t speak, and Kris knows, that whatever it is, he’s going to forgive him. He lifts his hand and gently traces the contours of Adam’s profile, every curve and line already a part of his memory. He doesn’t feel a need to tell Adam how lonely he’s been, or how much he’s felt pushed aside lately. When Adam reaches up and stalls Kris’ hand, staring intently at him in the dark, Kris starts to think that maybe Adam already knows all this.

“I’m sorry,” Adam repeats, his voice slightly pained, and Kris closes his eyes and just lets it wash over him and settle in that space somewhere in his chest.

He feels Adam’s hand leave his and continues to trace his way down the side of Adam’s neck and over his collarbone before finally resting over his heart. Kris opens his eyes at the feel of Adam’s heart beating rapidly under his fingertips and murmurs, “It’s okay.” And just like that, it’s as though something breaks in Adam and Kris is dragged into a hug, warm and flush against Adam’s chest, his arms trapped between their bodies. Adam holds on and buries his face in Kris’ hair, and Kris just presses himself closer. He can’t remember the last time Adam held him like this, but every nerve in his body is starving for it.

When Adam finally pulls back, Kris tilts his head up to look at him. Adam opens his mouth to say something else but Kris silences him. He doesn’t need to know the details right now. Adam will tell him when he’s ready to. It’s how they’ve always been and Kris can wait. He slides his hands up into Adam’s hair and gently brings their lips together. Adam freezes, surprised, but only for a second before he’s opening up, a silent thank you, like he’s taking everything Kris is willing to give him. And Kris doesn’t even have to think about how much he’s willing to give Adam. He knows.

Everything.
