"Are you sure about this?" Kris stood in the foyer, his arms loaded with suitcase and guitar.

Adam rolled his eyes. "Honey, would I ever offer an invitation I didn't mean? This house is altogether too big for one person, especially if that person's home has been a bunk for the last three months and hotel rooms before then. I don't know WHAT my mom was thinking."

"Your mom was probably counting on you not living alone." Just like he'd been counting on not living alone.

"Well, now I'm not. Drake's loss." He took a bag from Kris's hand. Kris felt a spark of something when their fingers brushed, but since Adam didn't react, he said nothing. "And I do have the most fabulous guest room for you. You will love it and never want to leave. You and Katy will raise your kids there, which, by the way, would be amazing and wonderful if you did." Kris could feel his stomach twist at that last.

The guest room was pretty awesome, in fact - big and warm, with a queen-sized bed, a television and a big dresser and even a private bathroom, and a view of the hills. Adam helped him put away his clothes and set up his laptop before running downstairs. "You call my girl and tell you're here and safe, okay? I think there's some real food in the house."

He did call Katy. Like all their phone calls the past few months, it didn't take long - she missed him, and she couldn't leave work just yet, and to give her love to Adam. He missed her and sent his love to everyone else, and here's a picture of the awesome guest room that Adam wants us to live in forever, and isn't that a laugh?

It took about five minutes, including the time it took to transmit the photo.

Adam was in the kitchen, which was by far one of the nicest kitchens Kris had ever seen. It was also one of the emptiest - Adam was apparently living off of takeout and paper plates. "And here I thought you had ALL the stereotypes. Actually, I remember you cooking at the mansion." Kris opened cabinet doors looking for anything made of actual metal or ceramic. The most he found were wine glasses.

"Who has time to cook? I don't even have time to buy BOOTS." He took a couple of pints of ice cream out of the freezer. "See? DINNER."

"No. Not dinner, and if I know you, you won't eat anything tomorrow out of guilt." He took the two pints and put them back. "I'm taking you out tonight to thank you, and also because you won't let me pay you rent, so I have to do something, and then we're going to find a supermarket, which will also be on me, and then we'll make this place a home, okay?"

"It became a home the moment you walked in, Kristopher Allen. It will stop being one when Katy gets here and you leave." Adam's face was blank and his lips were tight, Kris knew that look; he'd seen it before. He hated it.

"She's not coming here. We just don't seem to fit anymore." He smiled a bit. "Because I fit better with someone else." He kissed those sad lips. "I'll stay as long as you want me to."

"Stay forever."
