adamgrrrlDisclaimer: Adam and Kris belong to themselves. This did not happen, only in my mind.
Summary: Completely AU. Adam is twenty-seven year old and owns a cafe where Matt also works. For the past two months, Kris has been coming in for coffee.
Notes: Knowing me, this will probably be a 10 chapter fic if people like it. I have a lot of ideas going on in my head. Also, I changed the original title and this is now named after a song by Lady Antebellum. If you read the lyrics, their relationship won't be the things they should've done because it'll all work out.
Leaning casually behind the counter of The Corner Grind at quarter after nine, Adam waited for customers (and a tardy employee) to make their way into the start of their day. He hated having to open like this, but Matt had proved far too scatter-brained for such things. His mind roamed back to their first meeting, the start of their long and winding friendship.
--------
"So! Where you from?" Adam asked his new roommate at the University of California in Los Angeles.
Matt turned his head from unpacking yet another bag and smiled to himself. "Kalamazoo, Michigan," he answered in a pleased tone. It's his first time away from his home, ever, and Adam was the first person to ask him that since his arrival earlier today.
"Kalama-wha?" Adam's head tilted sharply to the side. "What the fuck is that? That isn't a real place," Adam said, laughing to himself.
"Believe it or not, it really is. I didn't make that up in this pretty head of mine," he replied cheekily, hanging up some plaid shirts in the closet.
---------
Adam was snapped from his thoughts when Matt walked in twenty minutes late. Of course. He couldn't remember a time when Matt wasn't late.
Thanks so much for gracing us with your presence!" Adam said in a sarcastic tone as he shifted himself back to an upright position. Matt merely tipped his hat at him and laughed. "Only for you, boss!" he quipped.
Matt took a seat on one of the stools at the counter, looking at the muffins in the display. He saw that dazed look on Adam's face that he'd seen many times before, mostly during their college years, and usually for the same reason.
Matt sighed dramatically. "Okay, spill," Matt requested.
"Spill what?" Adam asked, looking over at Matt innocently.
Matt gave him a look that said "really?" before answering. "What's going on in that pretty head of yours," he said with a soft laugh that was barely audible.
"That's you with the pretty head, not me. Mine's gorgeous, thank you very much," he said with a knowing smile.
Adam knew he was good looking, as did everyone else. He hated being born with blond hair, so right before college he colored it black and never went back. At times, he felt the need to 'change it up,' and he'd add other colors to it. Right now, he had some blue streaks in it that he really liked. He made these changes to his appearance on a fairly regular basis, just to let his "freak flag fly," his way of staying true to himself. That's just who he is. He could never conform to what less enlightened people wanted him to be, and liked to let that show. One thing he always let show was his sexy confidence, which seemed to just reel the men in. Just not the one he was hoping for, apparently. Inexplicably, that one always made him feel almost blushingly shy, and he couldn't figure out why to save his life.
"Whatever, man. You're just miffed 'cause he's not here yet," Matt said with a smile.
"I'm sorry, who?" Adam asked, giving a 'confused' look.
"You know who! Mr McStudly, he of the plaid shirts and the same routine coffee every single day!" Matt watched Adam carefully from the corner of his eye as he sniffed and shrugged his shoulders. "You ask me, I think he's kinda boring."
"He is not boring!" Adam exclaimed with an outraged gasp, before clamping his lips together. He fumed silently for having been baited so easily.
Matt smirked and said "Ha! Score one for Matt!" Matt glanced through the plate-glass windows as he stood to make his way to the time-clock. "Ooooh, wait! Here he comes, now. You can make those googly eyes and flutter your lashes at him while you sigh like a little girl!" Adam glared razor-sharp daggers at Matt's retreating back as he waited for McStudly to come in. He hated that Matt already knew of his feelings for the guy. He didn't know his name or how old he was, or even if he was gay. Of course, as was normally his luck in situations like these, the guy was probably 110% straight, with half a dozen girlfriends in his back pocket.

Kris heard the bell ring as he opened the door and stepped into the cafe. He made his usual survey of the restaurant, confirming that he was the first customer of the day, his preference. He liked the peace and quiet. Or, he usually did. He jumped a bit when he suddenly heard sounds of a piano from the entertainment area. As he looked over that way, he heard Matt start to sing along to the seductive tune.
I've been really tryyyyin', baby
Tryin' to hold back this feelin' for so long
And if you feel like I feel, baby
Then come on, oh, come on
Whoo! let's get it on
Ah, babe, let's get it ooo-oooon!
---------
Adam flushed pink, mortified, as the lusty strains of Marvin Gaye registered in his ears. He knew, but was still shocked at how obnoxiously obvious Matt could be when determined. "MATT!" Adam screeched, about six octaves too high. "Go clock in!" he exclaimed, promising a long, slow torturous death with his eyes. Matt giggled, a mischievous light sparkling in his own eyes, as he left the piano and ran to clock in thirty minutes late.
Adam stood there for several seconds, back to his customer, and fanned himself with a menu in the vain hope of calming his flustered nerves.
---------
Kris, having watched this whole drama play out in front of him, turned and waited patiently for Adam to acknowledge his presence. The humorousness of the situation was not lost on him, but as he watched Adam's embarrassment slowly fade, Kris decided to ignore it as a small kindness.
After about a minute, Adam was able to slowly turn and focus on his sole customer. "Sorry about that." He gestured towards the short hall Matt had gone through, then made a circular motion next to his head with his forefinger, universal sign language to indicate insanity. Kris just shrugged and shook his head, as if to say "What can you do?"
"So, what can i get you? Although, I already have a sneaking suspicion," he added with a crooked smile.
"I'll trust your judgment," McStudly replied, with a smile to make Adam's heart flutter.
Adam went and got his coffee, which he knew by heart now. It was something he'd done every day for the past two months since he started coming in here. He swiftly came back, giving him his coffee and taking his money.
"Enjoy." Adam said, a little shakily.
"I will, thanks," he said, giving him a nod before heading to the sitting area.
Sighing quietly, he picked up a towel and turned to wipe down the already-clean back counter, mostly to keep himself from staring until more customers came in. (The fact that he was slightly obsessive-compulsive about cleanliness was always a plus when the health inspector came, anyway.)
Kris walked off, but stopped in his tracks and looked back admiringly at Adam as he was cleaning. He smiled to himself and made his way over to his usual table where he could see a clear view of Adam working.
