Summary: Kris’s hair was all disheveled and the hoodie of Adam’s that he was wearing was all wrinkly, and Adam swore that he had some dried up drool on his face and sleep in his eyes, but Adam believed that when Kris was just waking up, when he was still in that sleepy haze, Kris was the most beautiful person in the world.
Notes: YAY! So, this is a happy chapter, I think. Finally! I’m not sure if the next part will be as smiley as this one, but you never know. We have to get to the really horribly sad parts at some point. But, since this was kinda getting depressing, I had to give you some happy Kradam times. So, here it is. Thank you to everyone who’s been commenting and reading; it really means the world to me. New commenters/readers are always welcome, of course. So, thanks for reading/commenting, and I hope you enjoy!
Part 1 ,
Part 2 ,
Part 3 Adam’s eyes fluttered open, the morning sunlight streaming through the open curtain across the room. Adam realized in that moment that he wasn’t in his bedroom like he should be. He was in the living room. Adam wondered why that was. He never passed out on the couch. Then, he finally remembered exactly what happened last night. Instantly, Adam’s whole body tensed up. He looked down at his leg and noticed that someone else’s leg was pressed up against his own. Adam felt himself gulp. He knew exactly whose leg that was.
As he tried to sit up, Adam felt something wet under his chin and groaned inwardly. Great. He was drooling. Excellent. Adam rubbed his eyes, trying to make himself more alert, and finally managed to get himself in an upright position. Kris was still sleeping, and as Adam looked down on his slumbering form, a smile made its way to Adam’s face. Kris looked so peaceful when he slept, and he always had a soft little grin on his face that just made Adam melt into a puddle of Abdul. He missed the days when he could just watch Kris sleep for an hour in the Idol mansion, despite how creepy watching someone while they sleep is. But Adam didn’t want to think of himself as creepy. He wanted to think of himself as someone who was merely appreciating and admiring Kris’s beauty.
After sitting on the couch, Adam looming over Kris and watching him for a few minutes, Kris began to stir, and Adam quickly leaped off the couch. He didn’t want to make Kris uncomfortable in any way, and the fact that a) Adam had slept beside him and b) Adam was staring at him while he slept might make things just a tad awkward between them. When their friendship was already teetering on the edge as it was, Adam didn’t want his creepy stalker tenancies to be the final thing that pushed their relationship over the edge.
Kris yawned, sitting up and stretching his arms high in the air.
“Well, good morning, sleepyhead,” Adam laughed as he pretended to enter the living room from the kitchen, acting as if he had been in there the whole time.
“Yeah, yeah,” Kris muttered, smiling up at Adam sleepily. “Good morning.”
“Did you sleep okay?” Adam asked, making his way toward the couch.
“Actually, it was the best sleep I’ve had in a long time,” Kris replied, chuckling slightly, and Adam couldn’t help but hope that maybe the reason why Kris had slept so well was because Kris had been sleeping with him. But Adam knew that that kind of thinking was crazy and delusional. Kris didn’t feel that way about Adam. And Adam had already told himself numerous times that he didn’t feel that way about Kris anymore, either.
“Want some breakfast?” Adam took a seat next to Kris on the couch, taking in his appearance. Kris’s hair was all disheveled and the hoodie of Adam’s that he was wearing was all wrinkly, and Adam swore that he had some dried up drool on his face and sleep in his eyes, but Adam believed that when Kris was just waking up, when he was still in that sleepy haze, Kris was the most beautiful person in the world. Adam couldn’t help but smile as he watched Kris scratch at the back of his neck, trying to get himself motivated. It took Kris a while to become fully alert and awake, Adam remembered. Adam used to have all sorts of fun messing with Kris and giggling at his expense when Kris was in that delirious state.
“Yeah, breakfast sounds good. But I hope you’re not planning on making it,” Kris smirked at Adam, and Adam pouted, knowing exactly what Kris was getting at.
“What? Are you saying that my cooking expertise isn’t worthy enough for you, Mr. Allen? I’ll have you know that I’ve gotten quite savvy in the kitchen since I’ve last cooked for you,” Adam replied, trying to make it sound like he was offended. Kris wasn’t buying it, though.
“I find that hard to believe,” Kris chuckled, rising off the couch and heading towards the staircase, obviously going to the bathroom to freshen himself up. Adam noted that he probably needed to do the same thing since he was sure he looked a hell of a lot worse than Kris did. But Kris could pull off the whole “I just woke up” look. Adam, on the other hand, knew that he could not.
“Whatever. I’ll show you. I’ll make you the best damn breakfast you’ve ever had, and you’ll eat my delicious food, along with your words. I can do it,” Adam said, mostly to himself since Kris was already halfway up the stairs.
Adam bounced into the kitchen, feeling determined. Adam loved a challenge, he never shied away from one, and proving himself to Kris was a challenge he remembered facing all too well. But, Adam decided, he was just proving to Kris that he could make a decent breakfast. Nothing more. That mindset didn’t stop Adam’s drive from kicking in, though. He put his heart and soul into preparing the pancakes for breakfast, and although they came from a box mix and he wasn’t sure if this really qualified as proving himself, he didn’t care. When Adam set his mind to something, he gave it all he had and then some.
Kris finally entered the kitchen, and Adam looked up from where he was working above the stove, noticing that Kris had indeed cleaned himself up. Although Adam loved the way Kris looked straight out of bed, Adam also could appreciate the fact that Kris cleaned up damn well. Kris’s hair was in its normal casual style, and he was still wearing Adam’s hoodie and track pants. Adam got this weird cozy feeling in his stomach seeing Kris in his clothes. He couldn’t explain it, and he tried to ignore it, but it was no use. Basically everything about Kris Allen made Adam’s insides squirm and jump and scream and cry and celebrate. Kris brought out so many emotions in him, and Adam hated that he didn’t really have a poker face around Kris. Kris was really the only person Adam felt could read him perfectly. It made Adam feel insecure and small and so unsure. But Adam liked the feeling all the same.
“I have to admit, those pancakes smell pretty good,” Kris remarked as he sat down at the island where Adam had sat at the night before, crying his eyes out. At the memory, Adam winced, hating the fact that he was so weak and fragile in that moment. He’d promised himself he wouldn’t let Ben’s words get to him, and yet, they had. But when Kris’s hand made contact with Adam’s back, he felt electrical charges shoot from his head down to his feet, and just like that, Adam forgot what he was crying about in the first place.
“I told you I can cook,” Adam muttered as he flipped the pancakes over in the skillet, browning them on the other side.
“Yeah, but the smell is just one part of it. You’ve got the taste, the texture, the look. Let me tell you, I’ve had some food that has smelled really good but tasted awful. You’d better impress, Lambert,” Kris replied, that cheeky look that he often broke out around Adam covering his face like a sly, super confident mask.
“I’ll impress, don’t you worry about that. Adam Lambert never disappoints. At anything,” Adam winked, and as he said it, Kris’s cheeks flushed scarlet. Adam loved using sexual innuendos in front of Kris. The way Kris got all uncomfortable and looked so innocent when Adam made a remark made Adam laugh and feel so proud of himself. He wasn’t sure why. He supposed it was because he just loved that he could bring out those reactions in Kris. He loved that he could make Kris blush. Kris looked so adorable when he blushed.
Once the pancakes were finished, Adam placed them on midnight blue porcelain plates and sat one plate in front of Kris. Adam weaved his way around to the opposite side of the island and then set his plate down, sitting across from Kris. Adam and Kris just sat there in silence for a moment, neither of them seeming in any hurry to begin eating. They just watched each other, and as Kris’s eyes, resembling to Adam a big, delicious piece of chocolate-fudge cake, stared directly into Adam’s, Adam felt himself become uneasy. His heart was picking up speed and he was having a hard time breathing; it was like Kris was sucking up all the oxygen in the world, making Adam suffer. But yet, looking into those delicious eyes of Kris’s didn’t make Adam feel like he was dying. He felt like he was on cloud nine, like he was in an alternate universe. Like he was the luckiest damn guy on the planet. Finally, after gazing into Kris’s eyes for one minute that seemed to play in slow motion, Kris cleared his throat nervously, and Adam looked away, resting his eyes on the granite countertop of the island. Instantly, as their eye contact broke, that high that Adam was on just disappeared.
Kris picked up his fork timidly and, with the side of it, cut a piece of his pancake off. He grabbed the brown, fluffy piece with the tines of his fork and shoved it into his mouth, chewing slowly, deliberately. Kris looked like he was a food critic or something, taking his time eating Adam’s pancakes. It made Adam almost nervous the way Kris was making such a big deal out of tasting the breakfast.
“You don’t want any syrup or anything? Butter? Those pancakes have to be totally bland, eating them without any condiments,” Adam observed, watching as Kris stuffed another forkful of pancake into his mouth. Kris shook his head.
“No, this is fine. I can’t fully judge the food if I put stuff on it,” Kris said, chewing as he did so. Adam had to laugh because it was just so darn cute seeing Kris talk with his mouthful. Especially when, while they were in the mansion, Kris had been such an advocate for good manners and being polite and whatnot. Adam smirked, noting that Kris should probably take his own advice.
After Kris had several more mouthfuls of his breakfast, doing that same slow chewing that drove Adam a little up the wall, Kris smiled at Adam. “Well, I have to tell you… those are some good pancakes. Congrats, you’ve officially redeemed yourself. I will no longer mock your inability to cook,” Kris said, his voice full of kindness. Adam thought back to their fall-out just over a month ago, and he couldn’t believe that Kris was talking to him in such a friendly way. Back then, Adam could have sworn up and down that he and Kris could never be civil again. Adam was often amazed at life’s ability to just change things around completely in the blink of an eye.
Adam and Kris finished their pancakes, their conversation limited. Adam thought that the reason they were staying quiet was because they both just wanted to relish in the moment, to just soak it all up. Adam rinsed their dishes off and then placed them in the dishwasher, Kris sitting at the island the whole time, staring at his fingers. When Adam was finished with the clean up, he approached Kris carefully. Kris appeared to be in his own world and Adam didn’t really want to disturb him, but yet, as Adam watched Kris sit there like he was oblivious to it all, the seconds that were ticking by became more and more known to Adam. He didn’t want to waste time, standing there, when at any moment, Kris could be snatched away from him again. So Adam cleared his throat anxiously, and Kris snapped out of his daze, looking at Adam. A smile made its way to Kris’s face, and Adam grinned back.
“So, what’s the plan for today?” Adam asked, and Kris laughed almost in a surprised manner, like he wasn’t anticipating spending the whole day with Adam. “What? Do you not want to hang out? ‘Cause, I mean, that’s totally cool. I understand completely. Things aren’t the same anymore and it’s just kind of, I don’t know, different and I get that you probably have better things to do, spend time with Katy, write, play guitar, but, I don’t know, I just kind of thought that-” Adam rambled, feeling heat rising up his neck.
Kris laughed, obviously enjoying the fact that Adam was uncomfortable. “Seriously, I really have nothing better to do. Besides, I’m kind of enjoying hanging out with you, awkwardness and all,” Kris answered, the smile on his face growing wider.
“Yeah… sorry. I know it’s weird, but we’ll fix everything, right?” Adam tried to get confirmation, but he wasn’t sure that either of them knew the answer to that.
“Absolutely,” Kris nodded, but he looked unsure, too. “Can we just stop by my house before we do anything? I need a shower. I feel like a dirty hobo.”
Adam laughed, taken by surprise at Kris’s upfront-ness. “Of course. I kind of feel like a dirty hobo, too. How about you go home, do your thing, and I’ll be over there to pick you up in, like, two hours,” Adam suggested, feeling like his whole body was smiling because he got to spend another day with Kris.
“You really need two hours to get ready?” Kris giggled, but Adam didn’t reply, just raised his eyebrows at Kris in a “you should know that, we roomed together for months” kind of way. “Alright, two hours it is. Can I have my clothes before I leave?”
Adam smiled and got Kris his clothes from the dryer, feeling completely exuberant. Then, the boys said their goodbyes and hugged each other. It wasn’t like the hugs they used to share - tight, loving and warm, completely like they were the only two people in the world - but it was a start. And the fact that it was a start, a new beginning with Kris, is what made Adam so happy. He felt like he was floating, like things were finally looking up for him. He had missed Kris so much, and he knew that they still had things to work out, but he was okay with that. He was ready. He had been dwelling on the past for too long, and Adam was finally ready to just suck it up, talk about it, and move on. And Adam knew that with Kris, he would be able to do that. They were friends, and Adam fully believed that their relationship, whatever it was, was destined to be. Adam was confident that things would work out, because Adam believed that he and Kris were meant to be in each other’s lives somehow. And Adam was excited, but also scared, to see where life took them next.
