Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Adam ended up staying that night as well, so Kris wouldn't feel like he abandoned him. He felt bad because, since he rejected his kiss, Kris had been less clingy even though it was obvious he still wanted it.
The next morning, Kris was in the kitchen, making breakfast, when Adam woke up.
"Hey cutie," Adam said, wrapping his arms around Kris's shoulders and kissing his cheek. The smile on his face showed that he loved it.
"Hey. Good morning."
"Good morning. What are you making?"
"Pancakes."
"Yum."
"You do like them? Good. I was afraid you wouldn't, but I didn't want to wake you up and ask."
"I'm not too picky. How do you feel today?"
"Fine."
"Just fine?"
"Fine is a good thing, isn't it?"
"Yeah, but yesterday you were fantastic and the day before that you were brilliant."
"Okay then," Kris said, turning around, putting his hands on Adam's hips, and risking a kiss, which Adam greedily accepted. Kris smiled again before continuing. "I'm fantastically brilliant."
Adam laughed and gave him another kiss. "Glad to hear it."
"How are you this morning?" Kris asked.
"Why would anything be the matter with me?"
"I don't know. Just making sure."
"I'm super great!"
Kris raised an eyebrow and smirked.
"Too much cheer?" Adam asked.
"Yeah. Don't do that. You sounded like Barbie."
"You remember Barbie but not your own best...boyfriend?!"
That word sent an electrical shock through Adam, but he loved it. Kris, however, frowned.
"Hm...that is weird. I'm sorry."
"I'm just teasing, sweetie." Adam gave him another peck. "Her boobs are unforgettable."
Kris laughed and turned back to the food. "If it makes you feel any better, I forgot how to make homemade pancakes...assuming I ever knew how, so you get the box stuff."
"You didn't know how," Adam informed him. "If you did, why would you even have a box mix?"
"...Shut up."
"I love you."
"Love you too."
The meal was ready a few minutes later, and they ate in silence, but it was a content, happy quiet, until the end when Adam said he had to get ready to go. Still, Kris held up well until the very last bag was in the car and they were standing in the front yard, getting ready to say goodbye.
"I don't want you to go," Kris said, burying his face into Adam's chest and trying his hardest not to cry.
"Well, I don't have to," Adam reminded him holding him tightly.
"I know, but you should. I mean, it's not fair of me to keep you here. You have your own home and your own life to get back to."
"You're the most important part of my life," Adam said seriously, but Kris laughed.
"You're sweet, but go."
"Are you sure?" Adam asked as he pulled gently away from Kris.
"Yeah. I'll be fine as long as you promise I'll see you soon."
"Of course. I'll stop over later tonight, or whenever you call and tell me to come. You can always come to my house too."
"Okay."
Forcing back tears himself, Adam cupped Kris's chin and gave him a long, deep, kiss. "My number is in your phone. Call whenever you need anything. Hell, you don't even have to need something. You can just call for the hell of it."
"Thanks...for everything."
"It was no problem. I'll see you soon."
"Okay."
Five minutes into the car ride, Adam wanted to call Kris and make sure he was still okay, but didn't. It wasn't healthy for him to get too attached, even if they were boyfriends...
"Oh god," Adam spoke out loud. How was he going to tell Katy? She was one of his close friends too, and she would definitely feel betrayed by this. Not that he was trying to betray or hurt her, or that he wanted to, in any way. He was in love with Kris, but, given the circumstance, would have never gotten with him if everything else didn't happen. But was that an excuse?
*Maybe she won't ever find out,* Adam thought to himself. After all, the doctors said there was a chance Kris could get his memory back. It wasn't very high, but it was still a chance, and Adam knew that if he remembered Katy, it would be goodbye to him. He tried to tell himself that it would be best that way, but wasn't so sure. How would Kris feel feel when he found out Adam had let him deceive himself?
"Damn it," Adam sighed. He really couldn't think about that right then. He should, but he couldn't. At least not without having a mental breakdown, and he had to keep his head. After all, no one at the court hosue would take him seriously if they thought he was a psychopath.
Once he was done at court, Adam decided to go see Katy. He could tell, even by texts, that she was lonely and miserable.
"Adam!" She squealed after opening the door and seeing him standing there. "Hey! Come on in."
He stepped in, gave her a long, tight hug, then asked the obvious question. "How are you?"
"I'm alright," she said, bu the billion pictures still up of her and Kris said otherwise. "How are you?"
"I'm fine," he lied too, but, just like him, she said nothing but,
"How's Kris doing?"
"Really good actually. He still hasn't remembered anything, but he feels great."
"That's good. So what's going on with your dad?"
"Still in custody."
"Good. He better stay there."
"I think he will for awhile."
Katy looked like she was going to say something else, bu then only let out a long breath. Adam could see her fighting off tears and bit his lip in guilt.
"Do you want to tell me how you really are?"
"Oh, I am okay. Really. Mostly....I just don't know if I did the right thing staying away. I think I did, but, in a way, it feels like I betrayed him."
"You didn't betray him."
"I know...I think. It just feels like I should be doing something for him."
"You can visit him. Just tell him you're his friend. I'm sure he'd like that."
"I'm planning on visiting him eventually," she said. "I just want to make sure I'll be able to do that without falling apart."
Adam gave her a sympathetic look. "You'll get there, Katy," he said, though he wasn't completely sure. He'd never seen a couple as in love as Kris and Katy, and he didn't know if a love that strong could ever fade away.
"Thank you, Adam. You've been great."
As she hugged him again, he was sure that the guilt was finally about to break him down. Somehow though, he held it together and hugged her back as she cried. After awhile, they were interrupted by Adam's cell phone.
"Sorry," he apologized, checking his caller ID. "It's Kris."
"Oh, it's okay. Answer it."
"Hello?" Adam said into the phone.
"Hey. What are you doing?"
"Nothing. Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine. Just miss you."
"Do you need me to come over?"
"I don't need you to, no."
"Do you want me to come over?"
"Well...not if you're doing something."
"I'm not. I'll be over in a few minutes, okay?"
"Okay."
"Bye."
"Bye."
"Is he okay?" Katy asked, concern written all over her face.
"Yeah. Just lonely, I guess."
She nodded. "Is this the first time you've left him since it happened?"
"Yeah. Since he's been home at least. I left the hospital sometimes, but only to shower..."
"You're a great best friend, Adam."
Adam flinched. He wished people would stop saying that.
"Seriously," Katy said. "I'm sorry you have to go through this alone."
"I'm not alone," Adam told her. "You have my back."
Katy smiled. "I definitely do. Now you better get back to Kris so he's not lonely anymore."
"Okay. You know you can call me if you need anything too, don't you?"
"Of course. Thank you."
He gave her another hug and a kiss on the cheek, then left. As soon as he was out of the house, he let out a deep breath. He felt worse, but better too. Katy still wasn't blaming him, and she had no reason to find out he was with Kris, at least not any time soon, so everyone would be as okay as possible for a little while longer.
Kris was waiting on the porch swing when Adam arrived back at his house.
"Hey," Adam greeted, smiling at him. "Everything okay still?"
"Yeah," Kris said, smiling as well, then walked down the steps to give Adam a hug; one that made it seem like it had been a year since they had seen each other instead of a few hours.
"Are you hungry?" Adam asked. "I can make something, or we can go out and get you away from the house for a little while."
"You're actually letting me go somewhere?!" Kris teased, a look of dramatic excitement on his face. Adam tried to glare, but it was so cute, he couldn't help but smile.
"Yes, I actually am. If I keep you in the house forever, you'll end up going crazy."
"I think I already did," Kris told him, eyes huge. "I heard voices earlier, but no one was there!"
"Shut it." Adam laughed. Kris smiled.
"Okay. Let me change and then I'll be ready."
**********
"Adam, we have a problem," Kris announced as he stared at the menu.
"What's wrong, honey?"
"I don't remember what I like...I've survived all day, but I figured if it was in my house, I liked it."
"Well, sweetie, you like almost everything," Adam told him, smiling.
"Oh." Kris smiled too. Still, Adam was happy when the food came out, Kris took a bite, and his face lit up in delight.
"I'm guessing it's good?" Adam asked.
"Mhm!"
"Glad you like it."
"I want to try popcorn again. I saw a commercial for it today and it looked really good."
"Want to go see a movie?"
"I'm allowed to do that too?!"
"I suppose."
"I could kiss you right now, bu tthis is to good to stop," Kris said, nodding at his sandwich.
"I'll take a rain check."
"Thank you."
On the way to the movies, Kris could barely sit still from excitement, but only a few minutes into the movie, Adam was beginning to wonder if he had pushed it too far. Kris, at first, was into the popcorn and ate it like it was his long last love, but he started eating slower and slower, and looked absolutely exhausted. At one point, he had Adam's hand, gently stroking it with his thumb. Adam didn't know if that was more of a loving gesture or just to keep him awake. He refrained himself from asking if Kris was okay though. He didn't want to annoy him, and figured he knew he could tell Adam if something was wrong. Halfway through the movie, Kris perked up again, so Adam figured it must have been a fluke.
"So, I think I love popcorn," Kris announced once the movie was over and they were on their way back to Kris's. Adam laughed.
"You did before."
"Really?! Awesome."
"Are you going to be okay staying home alone tonight or do you want me to stay with you?"
"Um, I'm pretty sure you need a break from me."
"Why would I need a break from you?"
"I've been so needy...you have better things to do than just baby me."
"Really, I don't."
"What about work? You work, don't you?"
"I work from home. Don't worry about it."
"No, just go home. I'll be fine."
"Promise?"
"Promise."
So Adam dropped Kris off, gave him a hug and kiss, then headed home for his first night alone in weeks. He didn't figure he'd get a lot of sleep, and he was right.
Adam wanted to call Kris right when he pulled himself out of bed at seven, but knew he would still be sleeping, but, an hour later, his doorbell rang. When he answered, Kris was standing there. "I found your address," he said, smiling. "I wanted to come to you instead of you coming to me."
"Well, I'm glad you're here, but...why?" Adam asked, secretly worried that Kris had driven.
"I forgot to tell you I love you last night," Kris told him before stepping in, closing the door and smothering him with kisses. "I love you, Adam."
"I love you too," Adam said, hoping what Kris said was the truth.
