How It Always Should Have Been Chapter 9, Part 2

Adam stared down at Kris in wonder. He wanted nothing more in the world than to make Kris Allen his husband, but he also hoped that Kris was not rushing himself.

“Baby, nothing would make me happier, you know that,” Adam began. “But we have been together all of a week. Are you sure you're ready for this?”

“Adam, stop ruining my moment,” Kris teased, then turned suddenly serious. “You know it's been more than a week. I believe in my heart of hearts that we have been moving toward this moment our entire lives. I guess it is what you would call fate, and what I would call divine intervention. Whatever it is, we are meant to be. So what do you say?”

With that, Kris slid out from under Adam, still sticky and covered in the remains of their love- making, and knelt on one knee, towering over Adam, who was still lying down.

“Adam Mitchel Lambert, will you marry me?”

Adam looked at Kris, at the unabashed love and affection shining in the brown eyes he loved so much, and suddenly screamed, “YES! YES YES YES I WILL MARRY YOU KRIS ALLEN!”

With that, he pulled Kris back down on top of him, covering him in kisses. Kris laughed delightedly, and Adam just gave him more kisses.

“Well, now that we are officially engaged, we have to call our parents and find a jewelry store on this island,” Kris was saying. Adam loved that he was taking charge. He knew that he himself had thus far been the dominant personality in their friendship, and now their relationship, but Kris was the one who had proposed, and Kris was the one who would be taking the reins on this. Adam was happy to follow along.

“Why don't you start the shower, and I'll text my parents and your mom?” Kris was saying, already reaching for his iPhone where it lay on the bedside table. “It is-” he checked the clock, remembering that his phone was on LA time- "5 12 PM. This is a romantic tourist spot. I'd be willing to bet the jewelry stores here do a roaring trade. They can't possibly close before 9.”

“Yeah,” Adam said, unable to keep the smile out of his voice. “Plenty of time to pick out a couple of fabulous rings, and I agree that our parents should be a part of this every step of the way since they have been such an excellent support network since all this started.”

Adam left the bed to start the shower, while Kris sent text messages to their parents. After he was done, he joined Adam in the shower, and they bathed quickly. They had all week for shower fun. The important thing right now was getting to a jewelry store and purchasing the symbols of their engagement so that the world would know that they belonged to each other.

Just as they were finishing up with getting dressed, Kris in a nicer than usual plaid shirt, the same figure hugging jeans he had worn at their coming out party, and his new Chuck Taylors, and Adam in a simple but elegant shimmery black button down, black jeans and matching boots, they heard a knock at the door downstairs. With a final peek in the mirror, Adam hurried down to get the door, with Kris on his heels.

They opened the door to find their very confused looking parents. Adam knew Kris, and he had no doubt that Kris had not divulged their reason for inviting their parents over so soon after arriving at their vacation spot.

“Well,” Kris began, once everyone was seated comfortably around the living room. “I bet you guys are wondering why I requested your presence. Wonder no longer. Adam and I have made a very serious, life- changing decision, and we want you guys to be a part of it. You've been our biggest cheerleaders throughout this whole ordeal, and it wouldn't be right without you.”

“Son,” Neil Allen spoke up, “What is this about? You know all of us will do anything for you and Adam. If you're happy, we're happy.”

Kris took a deep breath, visibly more nervous, and Adam squeezed his hand discreetly for encouragement.

“Well, Dad,” Kris continued, “I've asked Adam to marry me, and he has accepted. We'd like you guys to come along to help us pick out rings. And of course, Mom, Leila, it would be an honor to have the two of you help plan our wedding.”

Leila, Kim, and Neil stared at the boys, obviously speechless. Leila spoke first. Adam couldn't be sure, but he thought he saw tears in her eyes.

“Oh, this is the best news ever. I admit, I've lived my entire life hoping my sons would find happiness, especially you, Adam, because I know you to be such a romantic and never completely happy without true love. Now I have everything I have ever wanted for you. Success, and, most importantly, love. This is truly a happy day, and I'd be honored to help you pick out rings, plan your wedding, whatever you'd like me to do.”

After that little speech, Leila had tears flowing freely down her face, and she got up to go hug both boys tightly, finally kissing them both. Her sentiments were echoed by Kim and Neil, and just as they hugging was completed, there was another knock at the door.

Adam was confused; nobody else knew where they were. However, Kris seemed to be expecting someone, and he untangled himself from the web of hugging bodies and went to the door.

When he opened it, Adam could see a uniformed driver standing there waiting. He couldn't help but smile. Kris must have left the car service a message before joining him in the shower. Could the evening get any more perfect? All that was missing were the rings. Without further ado, the group headed out, in search of the perfect rings for Adam and Kris.

The driver didn't speak; he only nodded at them all, opened their doors for them, and waited for them to get settled inside the car before starting the engine and heading away from the beach and into town. Apparently Kris had already told him to take them to a jewelry store.

When they arrived, Adam was beside himself with joy. The store was huge, and seemed completely out of place in the quaint little island town. It seemed to carry every kind of jewelry imaginable, and they all had fun marveling at the luxury of it all until a chipper salesman in a white suit came to help them. Kris spoke up, obviously already sure of exactly what he wanted.

“We need two wedding bands, sir, men's wedding bands. One should be somewhat plain, with just a few diamonds. I will wear that one. The other should be flashier, but certainly not gaudy. Something tasteful and elegant. Adam here;” Kris pulled Adam forward by the elbow- “will wear the second one.”

“Of course, sir,” the man said smoothly. “If you will follow me, I think I have the perfect pair of rings.”

They followed the man to a counter on the other end of the store, and watched as he unlocked the case. He rummaged underneath for a second, in an area that was not visible to the public, finally producing two of the most beautiful rings that Adam had ever seen. The one that would belong to Kris was a thin, plain silver band, with diamonds, tiny but visible, circling the entire band. The other was much thicker, with larger diamonds, and a glittery finish, with the diamonds weaving around the band in an irregular floral pattern.

Adam let out a squeak of delight. Kris must have noticed, because he grinned, then asked, “Do you like them? We could keep these, or we could look further. We haven't seen anything else.”

Adam scanned the display counter of men's rings, but none came close to the pair the sales clerk had produced. “No, these are perfect!” he squealed, then turned to the clerk and said, “We'll take them.”

Adam pulled out his wallet as the clerk took the rings and put them into elegant boxes of white silk. Kris, however, had other ideas.

“I proposed, I pay,” he said, gently pecking Adam on the cheek.

Adam laughed and said, “OK, but this means I pay for our tuxes.”

“Deal,” Kris said amicably, and turned to pay for the rings. After taking his card back from the clerk, he seemed to remember that he had promised to allow their parents to help pick the rings.

“Mom, Dad, Leila,” Kris stammered, “ I am so sorry! What did you guys think of the rings? We invited you along, then completely ignored you!”

Kim patted Kris's head, almost as one would do to a skittish puppy. “They're beautiful, sweetheart, and I think I speak for Neil and Leila too when I say that it is such an honor to just be here for such a momentous occasion. Besides, we ladies get to plan that wedding! We definitely get a say in the tuxes, though, Kristopher. You have no fashion sense, and while Adam has a fashion sense, this is no time for anything that could ever, be it now or in the future, be considered too tacky, campy, or over the top. This is a wedding, and we will make sure it is treated as such.”

Adam grinned at Kim's words. It looked like the fact that her son was marrying a man wouldn't keep her from acting like a traditional wedding planner mom. He sighed, completely content, and looked at Kris, who looked equally pleased with the day's events. Now all they needed to do was let Kim and Leila plan the wedding of a lifetime for them.
