Part of my Allen-Lambert universe. Hannah is 12 years old and Joshie is 7 years old. Mrs. Willowby likes wieners too!

Check out my note at the end!

Just because they felt like it, the family piled into the van and drove down to the intersection of Melrose and North La Brea in Hollywood to enjoy an over-the-top hot dog lunch at Pink’s. When they were dating, Adam and Kris used to go there every week for a 10 inch or sometimes giant 12 inch…. You could stand in line outside for a take out order or you could sit at a table inside, if you were lucky enough to find one.

Today they were. There was one table left. Kris and Adam looked at it, a tad worried.

“Why don’t we get our lunch and drive down to the beach for a picnic,” Kris suggested.

Adam slapped his back, a little too hard, knocking his husband off balance. “What a great idea! Let’s do it.”

Hannah took a seat. “No, I want to stay here. We might see someone famous.”

“Yeah,” Joshie added, joining her. “We never see anyone famous.”

The boys were used to their kids just seeing them as their parents, not singing stars, so they didn’t take offense.

“Mrs. Willowby, you’re the tiebreaker. What do you think?” Kris gave her his best pleading voice, hoping she got the silent message.

“Do you think George Clooney might stop by?” she asked Hannah, ignoring her employers and sitting across from the kids.

“Well, you tried,” Adam lamented, looking at the photo wall of celebrity customers displayed above their table.
How embarrassing to be seen eating under a picture of yourself. Talk about drawing attention.

“Okay, I know when we’re outnumbered. Kids, the usual or do you want to try something new?”

“The usual.”

“The usual.”

“Mrs. Willowby?”

“The same.”

Adam and Kris got in line. A few people recognized them but a lot of celebs came here for the great food so the customers were usually laid back, leaving them alone.

“Mr. Allen, Mr. Lambert, wonderful to see you again. Can I take your order?”

“Hi Wendy, nice to see you too.” Adam looked up at the menu. “One coleslaw dog, one Nacho cheese chili dog, one Martha Steward dog, one Baja Veggie Dog … Kris?”

“… one Ozzy Spicy dog, two onion rings, two French fries, one tortilla chips, two lemonades, two ice teas and one Yoo-Hoo.”

Wendy read the order back then rang it through. Adam pulled out his wallet as it was his turn. He shook his head, befuddled. “I don’t know how you can drink a Yoo-Hoo with your hot dog. That’s just … ugh,” he cringed.

“Too each his own lover.”

Kris carried the tray to their table and Adam fetched a bundle of napkins, ketchup packets and straws. Joshie got the coleslaw dog, fries and lemonade; Hannah got the Nacho cheese chili dog, onion rings and lemonade; and Mrs. Willowby had the ice tea, fries and Martha Steward dog topped with relish, onions, bacon, chopped tomatoes, sauerkraut and sour cream.

“Daddy, Papa … did you know your pictures are on the wall?” Josh asked before stuffing his mouth full of food.

The heard snickers from nearby diners and smiled self consciously.

“Yes son, we know. Eat up,” Kris muttered.

Adam had been watching his weight. He had a tour coming up and costumes he had to fit into. He went with the Veggie dog with fresh guacamole, chopped tomatoes and chopped onions with an ice tea and a side of tortilla chips. The guacamole smushed out of the bun with each bite, filling the corners of Adam’s mouth. Kris wanted to lick it off but they were in public with the kids and had to behave themselves. Instead, he used his napkin and wiped off what Adam’s tongue didn’t catch first.

“Thanks baby.”

“No problem.”

Kris’ Ozzy Spicy dog was just as messy, a spicy Polish dog topped with Nacho cheese, American cheese, grilled onions, guacamole and chopped tomatoes. Adam returned the favor with his own napkin. Kris devoured his onion rings between bites of dog and washed it all down with chocolaty Yoo Hoo. Adam made fake hurling sounds. The kids laughed..

He made a grand gesture of wiping his mouth. “Delish!” he exclaimed. Mrs. Willowby clicked her tongue.

“Ugh!”

After lunch, the kids ran to the car with Mrs. Willowby in tow. Adam and Kris lagged behind, hand in hand.

“Care for another wiener when we get home?” Adam asked innocently, chewing on several breath mints.

“I don’t know. Do you have any ten or twelve inch ones?”

Adam choked on his mints and Kris giggled.

Yes sir, there is nothing like a hot dog nestled between warm buns.

READER CHALLENGE: Just for the fun of it, if you could create a Kradam dog, what would it be made of? Be creative, make it edible or decorative. Pink’s has various kinds of hot dogs named after celebrities and some concoctions are very interesting. Check them out for inspiration.

In the meantime, I’m firing up the BBQ. Who wants one?
