Author's Note: I originally started this two years ago for a prompt at aianonlovefest, then had to shelve it for several reasons. I was recently inspired to dust it off and fix it up/continue it. If you're someone who read the original back in the day, please be aware that many story elements have changed.
The Prompt (which I veered from in a couple of places with OP's permission): I want an AU with teenage Kris being abused by a parent. Maybe Neil's an alcoholic, or he's being raised by an aunt or uncle... Whatever floats your boat. Kris is new to San Diego and does a really good job of hiding the abuse out of fear that he'll be placed in the foster system if anyone finds out. Meanwhile, Adam is falling hard for sweet, laid back, talented Kris, whom he meets through open mic nights and draws into his circle of friends. When Adam accidentally discovers the hell Kris is living at home, he's heartbroken and furious, determined to shelter him. But will Adam's interference help or make things worse?
