Summary: On Halloween night, Kris meets a beautiful stranger at a
costume party.
“Vampire’s Kiss” (1/1)
by Lisa Michelle
Kris didn’t know how he had gotten talked into this Halloween
Party. Well, okay he did. It was Matt’s fault. Matt told him he might
meet someone. Right.
Halloween was for kids, anyway, but here he was at a party
given by two of Matt’s friends. Kris didn’t even know these two
guys, but they apparently had money.
The home looked as if professional decorators did it.
It should’ve been featured on one of those home channels where
they did a before and after makeover. The entire living area
was dimly lit and most of the lighting was from candles. Fake
spider webs adorned the corners of the walls. The wet bar had
a cauldron with dry ice coming out of it as a centerpiece.
Everyone was congregated around it placing their drink orders.
The guests all looked like extras on a horror movie set. Witches,
vampires and zombies all sipped brightly colored beverages and
chatted with each other.
Kris felt like he was the only one who didn’t belong. He really
didn’t have much of a costume, but he went over to get a drink
and attempt to blend in with the others. When he told the man
dressed in nothing but tight silver shorts that he wanted a beer,
the guy looked at him liked he’d never heard of the beverage.
Fine, he’d just stay and have the beer and then call Matt - wherever
he went off to and tell him he was leaving.
Kris got through a few sips of his beer before he saw a tall
beautiful man dressed as a vampire walk toward him. No, that
couldn’t be right. Kris turned and looked behind him.
“Who are you looking for?” the beautiful vampire asked.
“The person you’re obviously looking for,” Kris replied. “I’m
sure it’s not me.”
“It is,” the man replied.
“Oh, I . . . I’m sorry. I thought -“ Kris said. “Nevermind.”
The vampire eyed him up and down. “So, you’re dressed as a
football player?”
“Actually, Ryan Mallett,” Kris replied, looking down at his Razorback
jersey with the number fifteen on the front.
“Who?”
“Ryan Mallett, he played quarterback for the Razorbacks last year,
but now he’s in the NFL.” Kris knew he should’ve completed the
look with pads and cleats, but this was very last minute and he was
lucky to have put this on.
“I don’t watch football,” the man said.
Kris couldn’t help but stare at the man’s top hat and black cape.
He was in all black except for a purple tie tucked underneath his suit
jacket. He had on lots of dark eye makeup and his face was painted
whiter than normal. He even had two pointed top teeth. “Obviously,
you’re a vampire.”
The man took off his top hat, bowing slightly, revealing very black
hair. “Adam, pleased to meet you.”
“Oh, Kris, and I’m not really a football player,” he said. Okay,
that was stupid. Adam probably already knew that. “Sorry, I
don’t really want to be here. A friend of mine made me come.”
“You’ve never been to one of Cade and Bryce’s parties before?”
Adam asked.
Kris shook his head and took another swallow of beer.
“They are legendary,” he stated.
“What, the party or the men?” Kris said.
“Both,” Adam replied.
“Sorry, I’m not really in a party mood.” The music from the
other room had gotten louder. A partygoer bumped into Kris
and accidentally spilled his drink on Kris’s jersey. No apology.
He just kept on walking. “I think it’s better if I go.” Kris set
his beer down.
“Wait,” Adam said. “I know a place more private.”
“I don’t know -“ But Kris never finished that thought as he
watched Adam go up to a man dressed in a tux and whisper something
in his ear. The man handed him something and Adam came back to
Kris.
“C’mon, follow me.” Adam offered a hand bejeweled with rings
and Kris felt like he was a teenage girl in one of those vampire movies.
His resistance was lowered and he was about to succumb to the
beautiful vampire’s will.
Kris took his hand and they both went up a staircase. They stopped
at the third door on the right. Adam pulled out a key from his pocket
and unlocked the door. He opened the door to reveal a bedroom.
“Um, wait a minute I’m not going to -“ Kris started
“No, I mean the balcony,” Adam said. “C’mon.”
Kris walked through the large bedroom. It was sparsely furnished
with just a couple of chairs and a big dresser. Pictures of whom he assumed
were Cade and Bryce were on the walls and dresser. He followed Adam
out to the large balcony. It was definitely much quieter and had a gorgeous
view of the city at night.
“Wow,” Kris said for lack of a better word.
“I know,” Adam agreed. “Cade and Bryce have the best of everything.”
“I see that, but why did you want to bring me up here?” Kris asked.
“You wanted a quiet space and I believe the partygoers were getting
to you,” Adam commented.
“Was it that obvious?” Kris rubbed his hands over his arms at the
chill in the air.
Adam unhooked his cape and put it around Kris’s shoulders. “Is
that better?”
Kris smiled. “Yes, it is.”
“Sit down,” he told Kris.
Kris sat on the edge of one of the overstuffed lounge chairs. He
must look ridiculous in this cape and his football jersey. “So are
you supposed to be Dracula?” Kris asked, not knowing what else
to say.
Adam sat down in the chair directly opposite him. “No.”
Kris waited for more of an explanation, but didn’t get one. Okay, he
was up on a balcony with a beautiful man named Adam who was dressed
as a vampire and had no idea what his intentions were.
“I’m always a vampire for Halloween,” he elaborated. “And black
is my favorite color.”
“But you don’t drink blood?” Oh God, where did that come from?
He was always so nervous around gorgeous guys.
“No, but I wouldn’t mind nibbling on you.”
Kris blushed. Despite the darkness, he was sure Adam had seen
it. “Maybe I should find Matt,” Kris said, quickly changing the
subject.
“Is he your boyfriend?” Adam asked.
“No, he’s the one that made me come to the party,” Kris
replied. “I don’t have a boyfriend.” He felt like a loser as he
admitted it.
Adam took his phone out of his pocket. “Then you don’t
mind if I call you?”
“You want my number?”
“I don’t know any other way I can call you,” Adam said.
Kris had heard this before from other guys. Then they never
called him and he had always held out hope and then felt bad
for hoping that he’d get a call. “Look, Adam, I -“
“You busy next weekend?” Adam was studying his phone.
“Because I’m free next Saturday night.”
He couldn’t remember if the Razorbacks were playing in the
afternoon or had a night game next Saturday. He was sure he’d
be parked in front of the television when Adam never called.
“Kris?”
Kris got up from the chair and took the cape off, leaving
it on the chair. “Sorry, I don’t think it would work.”
“Then another weekend?” Adam offered.
“Really? Are you going to call or is it just something to say to
me right now to get my hopes up and then I wind up on the couch
after you don’t call watching TV -“
“Kris, just breathe, okay,” Adam told him. “Do you want
to go out with me?”
Kris nodded. He sighed and rattled off his number to Adam as he
watched Adam put in his phone. However, his skepticism remained
intact as he turned to leave the balcony.
“Wait, don’t go yet.”
Kris turned and Adam was standing right over him. He placed his
hand on Kris’s chin and leaned in to kiss him softly on the lips.
“I really do want to see more of you,” Adam said softly.
“Me too,” Kris mumbled, still in shock over the kiss Adam had
given him.
“Go find your friend,” Adam said. “We’ll have a nice quiet
dinner next Saturday, okay, sweetie?”
Kris nodded, walked back inside and headed back down to the
party. He was afraid if he turned to look back at Adam he wouldn’t
be there. It would’ve all been some type of hallucination.
