Kris hurried home from work to get ready.

The same van that had been so frightening just an evening before was now a welcome sight for Kris. He hurried away from where he'd stood watching at the window and ran his hands through his hair once more. Why was he so nervous? Oh yeah, his date was a werewolf.

For being a wolf, Adam was a total gentleman. He rang the doorbell, then presented Kris with a small bouquet of flowers when he opened the door.

“For me?” Kris blushed.

“No, for the dog across the street.” Adam giggled.

“Well, you never know with a wolf.” Kris chided back with a smile. “Would you like to come in for a moment?”

Adam nodded and looked around. “It’s not much, especially compared with your luxury, but it’s home.” Kris sighed. “Pardon me while I grab my jacket, and we can take off.”

“This is nice. Comfortable.” Adam took a step further into the room. “Cozy.”

“You haven’t told me where we’re going yet.” Kris hollered over his shoulder at Adam as he dug around in the closet. You just said to plan to make an evening of it and food would be included.”

“It’s a surprise.” Adam grinned.

“You wolves and your surprises.” Kris shook his head as they walked out together. “I don’t know.”

“I promise you’ll like this one.” Adam opened the van door for Kris.

Kris looked around as Adam drove. He watched the town fade behind them and realized they were headed back to the wolves’ den, where he had been taken captive just the night before. He tensed.

“Please relax. The other wolves will sense your fear and anxiety.” Adam reminded him. “I’ve instructed them all that you are not to be harmed.” He said softly.

“I’m really crazy to trust you, you know.” Kris looked at Adam.

“Are you scared? Of me? Or of my other wolves?” Adam asked.

“A little. Mostly of the others. Not of you, though.” Kris admitted.

“You will be fine if you stay with me until they get used to your scent.” Adam said matter-of-factly. “They’ll all be in human form tonight, anyhow.” Kris hadn’t thought of that. “That’s not quite as scary, is it?” Kris nodded. “Still scary, though.” Kris said sheepishly. “I don’t do that well around strangers.”

Adam took Kris’s hand and led him down the same hallway that had terrified him just one night before, but they didn’t stop at the same door. Adam finally paused by a big wooden double door. “Wait here, please.” He asked politely, before disappearing into the mysterious room.

Kris looked around, frightened now that he was alone. A couple men stopped to stare briefly, but scurried off when Adam reappeared. He was carrying a large backpack. “I was hoping you’d like to see one of my favorite places, Kris.”

Kris wondered what kind of place would be a wolf’s favorite, but he followed Adam anyhow. Adam opened a door at the end of the hall and they exited onto a patio surrounded by beautiful flowers. A stone path led across a grassy meadow to a lush green forest. “It’s beautiful!” Kris gasped. “Wait until we get there…” Adam smiled.

They followed the path into the woods. The sunlight and shade provided a thousand new images and colors along their way. Kris could hear a babbling creek in the distance. “We must be walking towards it.” He thought aloud.

“That we are.” Adam nodded as he pointed to the small stream ahead of them. A path made of stepping stones crossed it then disappeared into the woods again.

“Give me your hand.” Adam held his up to assist Kris as he picked his way across the slippery stones. The trail curved around, then opened into a clearing along the water next to a small crystal clear natural pool. A small waterfall trickled between piles of stones on one side. Kris took a deep breath. “Wow!”

“Welcome to my place.” Adam beamed proudly.

“This is yours?” Kris gasped.

“Our pack owns all this land, and I am the Alpha, the leader.” Adam grinned. “Anything on it is mine. I like to come here to get away from all the craziness.”

“Cool.” Kris said under his breath as he took in the beauty of the area. “I can see why this would be a favorite place. It’s gorgeous.”

“That’s why I wanted to share it with you, Kris.” Adam took off the backpack and set it on the ground. “I may be a big ugly monster sometimes, but I love beautiful things.” He smiled over his shoulder at Kris. “Would you help me spread out this blanket?”

Kris grabbed a corner of the blanket and smoothed it out over the nearly flat ground. Adam flopped down on it. “Come.” Adam patted the blanket next to where he was seated. “Join me Kris.”

Kris lowered himself and relaxed on the blanket, watching as Adam emptied the backpack between them. “Holy cow, do you have everything in there?” Kris asked, surprised when Adam pulled out settings for a full meal, including wineglasses and a bottle. “I hope so.” Adam giggled. “I wasn’t sure what you liked, so I brought several options.”

“I’m not picky.” Kris giggled. “But that’s a lot of food.”

“Nothing will go to waste. Promise. I have a huge appetite.” Adam grinned. “Now, would you like to eat or explore first?”

“This looks great, let’s eat.” Kris licked his lips.

Adam handed Kris a plate. “Dig in. Our chef is fantastic.” Kris watched as Adam loaded a bit of everything on his plate.

“Wow, this is good.” Kris sampled one of the dishes. “I’m used to bachelor cooking, frozen pizzas and microwave meals.”

“We only get the very best.” Adam smiled as he popped the cork on the wine bottle. “Keeps us strong and healthy.” He passed Kris a glass. “And happy, too.”

Kris tasted a small amount of each thing, not wanting to miss out on anything good. He was thoroughly impressed with Adam’s manners. “I… honestly expected you to eat like an animal.” Kris admitted. Adam laughed and went back to his proper etiquette, overemphasizing his movements to tease Kris.

“What did you like best?” Adam asked as they cleared their plates. “My favorite is the roast beef.”

“Actually, I liked it all.” Kris admitted. “It’s so much better than the crap I make myself.” He giggled. “Maybe I should get myself invited over for dinner more often. As long as I’m not the main course, that is…”

Adam stopped suddenly and sniffed the air. “Shh.”

“What is it?” Kris whispered.

“Something, someone is coming.”

Kris felt his body give an involuntary shiver. “You’re safe with me.” Adam reminded him.

Adam’s hair stood up on end. “Get behind me.” Adam instructed, and Kris didn’t hesitate. Adam let out a growl that scared Kris even more than he already was. He jumped at the sound. “Danny, come out. I know you’re there.” Adam instructed. A young man peered out from behind the rocky ledge. “What are you doing here? I left instructions that I was not to be disturbed.”

“I smelled something unfamiliar. And delicious.” The younger man admitted.

“Kris, this is Danny. He is one of my newer wolves.” Adam stated. “Danny, this human is Kris, and he’s off limits. He’s mine.” Adam’s hair stood up again, and Danny nodded his head. “Yes, Master. I’m sorry for disturbing you.”

“You will leave us now, Danny.” Adam commanded. The other man ran off into the woods. Adam looked to Kris, who was obviously frightened by the other manwolf’s sudden appearance. “You have nothing to fear, Kris. As you can see, I am in complete control of the situation.” Adam put his hand on Kris’s. “Please relax. He’s gone now.”

Kris took a deep breath and looked to Adam. “What would happen if one of your other wolves disobeyed you?”

“The consequences would be… rather unpleasant.” Adam left it at that, and Kris didn’t push any further.

“Would you like to have dessert now, or look around some?” Adam smiled at Kris with his beautiful human eyes. “There are still a couple surprises I haven’t shared with you yet.”

Kris looked up. “I’ve kind of lost my appetite.” Kris sighed.

“Let’s pack this up for later.” Adam suggested, already gathering things into the backpack.

“My next request is going to sound a little weird.” Adam admitted. “Do you trust me?”

Kris nodded. “For some strange reason, I do.” He giggled.

“Take off your shoes. And socks if you’re wearing them. And roll up your pants.” Kris looked at him funny, but did as he was asked. “Now follow me.” Adam led him into the stream. “It’s cold!” Kris yelped and pulled back. Adam laughed. “This is worth a little cold, Kris.”

Kris followed Adam to the rocky cliff, then was surprised to see Adam disappear behind the waterfall. “You won’t get wet, except for your feet.” He reassured Kris. A hand came around the water. “Here is my hand if you need it. See, it’s dry.” Kris took Adam’s outstretched arm, and allowed Adam to pull him closer.

Kris blinked. He was staring into a small cave hidden behind the waterfall.

“All the comforts of home.” Adam grinned at Kris. “Even electricity.” He flipped a switch to turn on a generator. Kris looked around. The cave split into several branches, and Kris could see it was well kept... for a cave.

“Feel free to look around!” Adam beamed.

The entrance room they were standing in was furnished with a couch, table and chairs, and a large rug. Peering down one corridor, Kris saw a small desk and a full bookcase, and down another was even a small bedroom set.

“What is this place?” Kris gasped.

“My vacation cottage!” Adam smiled. “Noone else even knows it’s here. Except for you, now.”

"Wow!” Kris couldn’t find any other words.

“This is my private sanctuary.” Adam told him. “Make yourself at home.”

Kris wandered around, looking at the furniture and checking the titles on the bookshelf before pausing in the small bedroom.

“You even have a fireplace in your bedroom?” Kris gasped.

“I like my luxuries.” Adam grinned. “Plus I’ll bet it would be great to cuddle beside.”

“Might be…” Kris trailed off, smiling.

Adam lit a fire in the small fireplace in the bedroom, then sat down on the bed. “Come here, Kris.” He patted the bed next to him. Kris sat down. “Do you mind being close? I love to cuddle.” Adam asked rather shyly for how brazen he usually was. “I’d like that.” Kris scooted closer. Adam pulled him into his arms and leaned back on the bed, taking Kris with him.

“One more surprise.” Kris didn’t know what else this strange creature could have in store for him, but he cuddled into the warmth of Adam’s human body.

Adam tugged on a rope beside the bed. A portion of the ceiling moved back, exposing a lovely view of the sky.

“This is truly a moonroof”. Adam spoke softly. “I like to watch the stars and moon from the bed.”

“You really are full of surprises.” Kris said softly. “I never knew someone like you could be such a romantic.”

“Romantic, huh?” Adam snickered. “Do you like that, Kris?”

“Uh huh.” Kris moved closer to Adam, losing himself in the arms draped around him.

“I hope you don’t mind that I didn’t take you on a traditional date.” Adam spoke softly. “I… still have some… issues… even when it’s not the full moon.” Adam looked up hopefully. “Control issues. With my wolf side.” He took Kris’s hand in his. “I like going out. I just prefer a bit of privacy most of the time.”

“I don’t mind at all.” Kris curled his fingers around the larger hand holding his. “I’m… kind of a loner anyway.” He admitted. “This private time is much more my style.”

“You don’t have anyplace you have to be, do you?” Adam asked shyly.

Kris looked up at the stars above them. “No place better than this.” Kris whispered. “If that’s an invitation to stay, I accept.”

Adam pulled Kris closer and they fell asleep in each other’s arms in the moonlight.
