I will now make a comment that has nothing to do with your post; it's just something I wanted to tell you.
I just finished a book called "The Yiddish Policemen's Union", by Michael Chabon. He's most well-known for "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay." The book takes place in an alternate history where Jews settled Alaska after World War 2. Also, the plot involves a lot of chess. As I was reading it, I thought it was something you'd like. Especially since you'll probably get more of the Yiddish jokes than I did.
I just read a review for it on the Onion AV Club, and it sounded cool. And I definitely dug Kavalier & Clay. But, I'm kinda on this self-imposed moratorium on buying new books until I've made a more sizable dent in my "to-read" pile
