Once upon a time I was a nice little democrat who believed that everything should be solved with social programs. Raise taxes -- especially on the rich, who deserve nothing -- and give the money away because that will make everything better.

It's a nice pipe dream, I suppose.

What is so nice about rewarding the wellfare parasites by punishing the people who have burned lean tissue late into the night, who realize that 40 hours is not the maximum amount of time you should work to get ahead, and who, for the most part, took the time to use the educational opportunites given to them and better their lives. Not trying to rain on your parade bro, just couldn't resist the comments. Got into a DISCUSSION at work tonight and had to walk away not to upset guests. Welcome to the bad and scary world of not being a victim. Welcome to being a libertarian. Come and visit un some time. By the way, i'm going to make you guess who this is. You up to it?

Either this is a bit of overblown rhetoric (in which case you might want to tone it down) or you believe that the poor and the rich invariably earn their own lots in life (in which case you're a daft fool who has never touched the poverty line). Either way, interesting.

The social worker in me will no longer allow me to be silent;) But I promise I'll keep this short, rather than digging out my old papers and start typing away....

I intern at a small county mental health agency. We see the worst of bad situations on occasion. We also see abuse of the systems designed to help people. There are many people who don't work, and should. There are many recieving benifits then don't need. They've been doing this their whole lives, and show no signs of stopping.

But there are also those in need. They may be very mentally ill, or diabled, or both. They may *want* to work, but are unable to hold down a job due to untreated difficulties. They may have no where to live, and no hope for the future. They not have completed high school. These people *need* help, and many aren't even *aware* of the programs that exist to help them.
I feel many of our social programs are flawed. The point was made about families supporting the individual. Our system is set up so that in some cases, if a family is willing to ( ... )

Libertarians are just confused. Quite a lot of them are secretly resentful of "welfare parasites" for not living up to their own libertarian ideals, and there's probably some jealousy as well in having the luxury to fail and still receive support. There will always be people who take advantage of the social support net just as there will always be people who suffer without it. So, we as a society make a value judgement: how much of a support net are we willing to provide before we become disgusted with its excesses ( ... )

I will neither countenance nor reply to ad hominem attacks. If you wish to have a civil conversation without attacking me personally, I think I have displayed my willingness to do so.
