[ Canon Point ] : Just before boarding the Ark of Yamato

[ History ] :
Once a resident of Takamagahara (the Higher Celestial Plain), Amaterasu is the goddess of the sun and the goddess of creation, hence why she is addressed as 'mother to us all'. The fearsome Yamato-no-Orochi, an eight-headed serpent, waged war on Takamagahara, unleashing thousands of demons onto the plain, destroying almost the entirety of the heavens. Waka, from the cursed Moon Tribe, brought down the Ark of Yamato to evacuate the remaining Celestials to safety, but the ship was infiltrated by hundreds of thousands of demons, and crashed into the earth, killing the Celestials and unleashing the demons upon Nippon. Amaterasu, in the meantime, had been fighting Orochi, and the two together fell to earth, near the little hamlet of Kamiki.

The faith in the gods was so weak that the villagers saw Amaterasu as nothing more than a white wolf, constantly stalking and patrolling the village. When Orochi began to demand a maiden sacrifice on every full moon, they began to suspect that the white wolf - that they called Shiranui - was an agent of Orochi. One villager, the great warrior Nagi, challenged Amaterasu, though he fell under her strength. In place of the maiden Nami, Amaterasu brought Nagi to the cave - Nagi, according to Waka, was the warrior fated to finally slay the dreaded Orochi, and so Amaterasu fought against Orochi, weakening the beast enough for Nagi to finally slay and seal him away. The battle cost Amaterasu her life, however, and she quietly died.

One hundred years later, Amaterasu was reborn from a statue dedicated to Shiranui, albeit with her powers significantly weakened. She slowly began to regain her Celestial Brush techniques, eventually amassing enough to slay Orochi once again, and for the final time. But from Orochi's bloody husk rose a number of black smogs, dark spirits, which moved south. Following these black masses, she found her way to the capital, Sei-An city. The city was plagued with a poisonous mist, which was being emitted from the ill emperor. Amaterasu shrunk herself to the tiny size of a Poncle (or a bug, whichever you prefer) and entered the emperor's body, destroying the demon that was the source of the disruption. After clearing out the city of the mist, Amaterasu tracked down the mastermind behind it - the fearsome Ninetails, the 'Dark Lord'. By going underwater and interacting with the Dragonians, accidentally killing the Water Dragon and thereby the king of the Dragonians, Amaterasu assured herself a method to infiltrate the Dark Lord's nearly impenetrable fortress. Unfortunately, the Queen of Sei-An, Himiko, gave her life in order to predict the next location of the island. The queen of the Dragonians transformed herself into the Water Dragon, creating a bridge into the Dark Lord's fortress. Amaterasu ascended to the top of the floating island, destroying the Ninetails and restoring peace to the southern part of Nippon.

The black spirits rose from Ninetails' broken corpse, flying to the north, where Amaterasu followed. The frozen north known as Kamui was hostile terrain, home to a pair of demons called Nechku and Lechku.

Here is where things get confusing, thanks to our friend 'time travel'. Even before going to defeat the demons, Amaterasu entered the depths of the dangerous Yoshpet forest, where a young Oina tribe girl had gone through a gate known as the Spirit Gate. In order to retrieve her, Amaterasu also entered the gate, to find herself 100 years in the past, on the legendary night that Orochi was first slain. It turns out that Amaterasu's future self, not her past self, was the one that defeated Nagi, took him to Orochi's cave, and fought Orochi. And to protect Nagi from falling debris, her old self took the blow for Nagi, and died in the future Amaterasu's place so that the future Amaterasu would be born in the first place.

Returning through the Spirit Gate, Amaterasu went to slay the demons Lechku and Nechku, locating the final of her brush techniques and regaining almost her full power. When she went to challenge Nechku, the silver demon, her old self appeared and assisted her, crushing him. The warrior Oki, of the Oina tribe, had been battling the golden demon, Lechku, and they crashed into the battlefield. When Oki went to attack the demons, the past Amaterasu took the fatal blow for him, and returned to the past. With Oki at her side, the future Amaterasu destroyed the twin demons, which halted the fearsome blizzard gripping the north and made the Ark of Yamato, which was frozen in the massive ice lake at the base of Mt. Ezofuji, rise once more. (This is the point of canon I will be taking her, however, I will continue my summary.)

Amaterasu ascended into the Ark, destroying the demons that had collected there, and went to challenge the true foe - Yami. Yami's giant, mechanical form used the Day of Darkness - a solar eclipse - to steal away Amaterasu's strength, which she slowly regained in her grand battle with him. Brush techniques return to her, one by one, until she had her full collection. She destroyed him once, but he revived, sucking away her powers once again. The power of faith in the gods, spread by her emissary Issun, restored her to her absolute fullest strength, and allowed her to destroy Yami once and for all before returning to the Celestial Plain to restore the heavens...

[ Personality ] :
Despite not actively utilizing any real means of communication, Amaterasu is a rather expressive and emotional in her interactions with others. Though she herself is not known to speak, as Issun does that for her, she at least seems to understand speech. However, Ammy is known to be quite lazy. If a conversation bores her, she'll curl up and snooze, even if it's something extremely serious and important. There's an obvious nonchalance in her behavior, and she usually seems pretty content laying around and receiving food and attention from people.

But Amaterasu is a warrior for nature. She takes battle seriously when necessary, and is fearless even when faced with a frighteningly powerful foe. When facing weaker foes, her mischievous side peeks through, and she tends to mock her foes, even urinating on them (or even planting dung bombs. So classy, Ammy.). She's very mischievous outside of combat, as well, and she interacts and plays with all types of strange humans. For example, she tends to race against delivery men that have an obsession for speed, or she chases down thieves that have some sort of trademark trick that lets them get away. She's extremely competitive, and always participates in these little contests, and tries to win these challenges. But she also tends to simply enjoy herself, and just play with humans, especially children. Tackling them, chasing them, retrieving food or items for them - she enjoys interactions with people in general, and loves to be greeted with affection. And of course, food. She loves food, and tends to drool when food is set in front of her.

Playing with humans (and getting fed as a reward, yum) isn't the only thing she does for people, however. She offers her assistance regularly to help those in need, be it something small like getting some more charcoal for a little girl to keep drawing, or taking on a massive demon on behalf of a queen to defend the people of a city. And aside from it being her job, she seems to enjoy making things right, both for the people and in nature. She regularly restores nature as she goes, and she is naturally loved by the wildlife. In the serenity of the wilderness, she's very gentle, and seems to behave very wisely (despite being called stupid-looking by a number of other characters), and is truly majestic when she's relaxed.

She doesn't seem to get all that offended or enraged at being insulted (though occasionally you'll hear an occasional growl at being called stupid-looking), and unlike her bouncing companion, takes it with more grace. Either that, or she doesn't care. Or perhaps she simply doesn't understand, and is staring with empty-headed derpiness - it's a little hard to tell when she gives you a blank stare with her slightly slack-jawed expression. Not to say that she's stupid. She's quite perceptive when the situation calls for it, just as she can be serious during the appropriate moment. Rather, she can be distracted easily (by food, affection, and pretty ladies~) and she's often times simplistic, enjoying the simple pleasures in life rather than anguishing over her situation.

By stepping onto the Ark, she demonstrated the strength and resolve she holds in her heart, proving that she's every inch as brave as she is strong. Righteous, fair, and pure-hearted, if a little impish, playful and simple-minded, Amaterasu is a very benevolent god, and likes to settle herself right down with the people that consider her their great ancestor.

[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
In terms of weaknesses, it's hard to imagine a god with vulnerabilities. However, because of several events, Amaterasu had been thrown to the earth. Despite her powers, she has a very mortal body, and that of a wolf rather than a human. She's small, and though she's a tough brawler, she really only can fight with the help of her powers and weapons. Otherwise, her body is every bit as mortal as the average human. With the power cap in Vat, the aforementioned powers are also extremely limited, and if she's caught with dry ink pots it will be much easier to attack and seriously harm her. Yami had the ability to steal her power, so it is possible for Amaterasu to lose everything she's earned, as well. But her physical weaknesses aside, the sun god can be quite a nuisance to evil forces in all shapes and sizes.

Amaterasu has a nice little laundry list of tricks she has besides her main power. Some of that includes her weapons, which include Glaives (massive, thick swords), Rosaries (strings of holy beads), and Reflectors (strong mirrors with divine strength). She will come with the first of each weapons of those types, meaning the weakest of all three.

--Amaterasu's 'health' is measured in Solar Energy. This does not decline other than when taking damage. Amaterasu is not invincible, and is vulnerable to any and all kinds of damage.
--Her ability to use her Celestial Brush techniques (detailed later) is based on her Ink Pots. They allow her to brush over the canvas of reality and alter it, but the downside is that these ink pots can be extremely limited. In Vatheon, they will be very few and very shallow, to limit her abilities further. If the ink runs dry, Amaterasu's powers disappear, including the ability to use weapons and any blessings nature normally offers her.
--The Astral Pouch is a rare item that allows Amaterasu revive once if she loses all of her Solar Energy. In her world, that number stretched up to three, but in Vat, she will only have one.
--She's very acrobatic, thanks to training with a certain Dojo master, and can twist her body and flip out of the way of attacks.
--When she runs, the winds will come and seemingly lift her feet, allowing her to run at great speeds.
--Likewise, the winds allow her to 'kick off' the air mid-jump in her Double Jump ability.
--When she sprints, jumps, or dodges attacks, a small wave of flowers often blooms in her path.

Her main power and the strength of the gods, however, is known as the Celestial Brush. Through thirteen different techniques, Amaterasu can call upon the power of nature. In Vat, the strength of her combat abilities will decline severely, and her restorative abilities will be only mildly nerfed in comparison. No fixing an entire building or making a jungle grow in the city, and all that! Her techniques are as follows;
1. Rejuvenation: Restores broken or missing structures (such as bridges or laundry poles) with a stroke of ink.
2. Power Slash: Rends foes and obstacles alike in a fearsome slash. (In Vat: very weak; more blunt force than a cutting blow)
3. Sunrise: Makes the sun rise. (In Vat: disabled)
4. Greensprout: Has three effects;
A. Bloom: Causes trees and flowers to erupt into blossoms, spreads flowers on the painted surface, makes a tree grow in an instant where a "seed" of ink is planted. (In Vat: restricted to natural structures. Trees that sprout are smaller.)
B. Water Lily: Creates massive, strong lilypads that will support Amaterasu's weight in water.
C. Vine: From a special flower, Amaterasu can connect herself to a vine and be drawn to the flower, which hovers in the air. (In Vat: there are no such flowers.)
5. Cherry Bomb: A firework-like bomb that deals fearsome damage to an opponent in a dazzling display. (In Vat: Half as effective, more of a flash bomb than destructive one.)
6. Waterspout: Moves water along a brush stroke, creates a whirlpool that will transport Amaterasu to another spring of the same kind, creates rain that purges evil and slows enemies. (In Vat: no transporting whirlpools, rain is lighter and ineffective for battle)
7. Crescent: Makes the moon rise and night fall. (In Vat: disabled)
8. Galestorm: Creates a mighty gale of divine wind to knock foes off their feet, creates a mighty whirlwind that sucks up enemies. (In Vat: winds are milder, the whirlwind is reduced to an annoying dirt devil)
9. Inferno: Moves flame along a brush stroke, creates a burning fireball. (In Vat: extremely limited, one-time use.)
10. Mist: Slows time for four seconds. (In Vat: disabled)
11. Catwalk: Creates a sticky walkway with a brushstroke originating from a Kabegami (cat god) statue. Allows Amaterasu to walk up walls. (In Vat: there are no such statues)
12. Thunderstorm: Moves electricity along a brush stroke, makes a massive thunderbolt descend upon a foe. (In Vat: extremely limited, one-time use.)
13. Blizzard: Moves ice along a brush stroke, freezes damp/cold air, makes ice shards to slice the foe. (In Vat: no ice shards; very limited use)

[ Other Important Facts ] :
Since Ammy doesn't speak in her canon, I will be playing her by the fan theory that she CAN talk, but simply chooses not to if she can help it. I am also assuming that since she's very intelligent and has the ability to paint, she knows calligraphy and may be able to communicate in writing if necessary.

A good example of Ammy being granted speech would be Luceti's divinepooch . As seen on her journals, a majority of her entries are action-based yet still very involved. She almost never has to use words to communicate what she wants, needs, or feels, and a lot can be done with just her actions. And when she does speak, it's when the moment truly requires it, such as when she was communicating with Moro (whom I play) to be sure that Moro wouldn't hurt anyone needlessly. That can be found here as reference. Simply put, giving her speech will allow her to communicate where she absolutely must communicate, but she will go without it whenever and wherever she can.

No speaking! She is a "mute" character. \o/

Technically, Amaterasu has no known gender, but because her namesake is a goddess I will be going by female pronouns for simplicity.

And, assuming that the mark also dyes fur and not just skin, Ammy's mark will be on her front right paw. (This is more for self-reference than anything else)

[ Sample ] :
Waking up in a new place hadn't been a very fun experience for Amaterasu. Especially considering that she had woken up after taking what she thought was a quick nap before facing off against the embodiment of darkness - it had been a very rough couple of days as she had to say farewell to her companions and prepare to leave the earth. Seeing a small orb of green light was an added disappointment. She had woken with a surprised excitement, only to realize that it wasn't her beloved traveling companion. And with a whine, she could only sulk around the new underwater city, curiously looking for Otohime or anyone of the Dragonians. This place was not the palace, obviously, but it had to belong to the Dragonians.

But with every person she saw, she let out another pained whine as she realized that she wasn't anywhere familiar. The people were different, and though they were so very courteous, they were strange and almost too coddling. She'd happily accept a little petting before wandering off again to find something familiar. She even spent some time laying down ink and planting some flowers on the ground, and planting a few trees since the area she was roaming seemed void of them. After a few hours, she realized that she was somewhere strange, and her troubles all but forgotten, she began to explore the city with a piqued interest.

However, something amazing caught her attention. Something absolutely beautiful, that she couldn't peel her eyes away from. Beautiful, round shapes, radiating warmth and the sweetest scent... such a thick aroma, so sweet and so very slightly salty. Teasingly wrapped in cloth that framed them, displaying them in all their soft, warm beauty, for the world to see. So very tempting... their allure causing Amaterasu to drool...

Those were the most delicious-looking sweet buns Ammy had ever seen in her life.

[ Questions? Comments? Concerns? ] :
I know you guys are uneasy about an animal character, and are worried that she'll be little more than a glorified pet, but I really appreciate you giving me the opportunity to go above and beyond that limit. Thanks for giving me a shot! And now she does not speak! No words necessary. Thank you, mods!
