Ganbaranai Corner with Dr. Kamata
The spring baseball season will be starting soon so Dr. Kamata decided to take a look at what baseball players are doing other than baseball. Members of various teams have started giving money and time to help support various charities. One is helping develop places for kids in underdeveloped countries. Another decided to help promote treatment for babies after his own son had to spend have a year in a NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) after birth. Other players are also helping to donate various vaccines, school supplies and other commodities to children both in and out of Japan.
After a video they cut back to the studio where Dr. Kamata explained to Koyama various methods and costs of donating things like this.
Spring Allergies
They comment that the spring allergy season will be starting soon. Koyama says he has bad allergies so is curious about new methods of combating with this spring downer.
Japan sells tons of goods to help with allergies-- masks, glasses, drinks, pills, spray for your clothes and more. However new treatments is coming out which doesn't keep the pollen away from you- but helps your body learn to cope with the pollen. One treatment involves getting medicated drops on your tongue and another involves just eating a specially processed type of rice!!
B-1 Food Grand Prix announcement
Koyama presents in studio about how the B-1 Food Grand Prix will be put on in Himeji this year and Kokura next year. They then cut to a video in Kokura exploring the food culture there. It's a big deal to be chosen as the location for this grand prix because it will bring in lots of tourists and revenue to the city! Kokura is famous for "yakiudon", fried udon noodles often with pork.
Special guest - Ikegami Akira
Mr. Ikegami comes live into the studio and has all the casters take the entrance exam for middle school which was given in the first week of February. According to Mr. Ikegami, you can learn a lot about the state of education and what schools are looking for in students today. They look at questions from several different subjects. The questions prove to be quite challenging for all the casters and reporters. Koyama is called out on one to answer but doesn't quite get it right. The news casters are all shocked that elementary school 6th graders are supposed to be able to pass this test and get into private middle schools! Of course not all students take them, but many do. For those who do take them, the test alone often costs 20,000 yen and then if they successfully pass and enter a private school the school fees are expensive too. In the past more students would take the test "just for the heck of it" or "just to try" but these days only serious students take the tests.
After this explanation they try answering even more questions. One asks them to pick which of 6 different Japanese food dishes are actually eggs and Koyama happily wiggles his board when he gets the right answers (tarako, ikura & uni). Other questions quiz on the proper way to heat rice in a microwave, how to pick logically where to start a business and more.
Ki ni Naru
Koyama visits China Town in Yokohama around Chinese New year to enjoy some delicious Chinese food. He gets to see a lion dance show too and watches them practice on 2 meter high poles! Koyama himself tried on the head part of the costume and stands on the poles to see how hard it is to dance and jump around there. He talks with the two boys practicing and learns that a month ago when they did their first live performance, they fell and messed up multiple times. Koyama watches their New Year show now and cheers them on from the sideline. Thanks to all their hardwork and practice, their 13 minute performance goes flawlessly this time.
