The Big Read

I'm ashamed to say that I've only read eighteen of these... My "read classic books that I somehow missed before" project of last summer hit a big FAIL somewhere along the line. :( However! I'm copying this into a Word file for a handy reference. (See, memes *can* be useful!)

The trouble with this list (and others like it) is I can't for the life of me figure out their criteria for inclusion. Crime and Punishment is being equated with The Five People You Meet In Heaven? Seriously?

Personally I would recommend Edith Wharton over Jane Austen any day of the week. I would also include the following by removing most of the "Top 10" best-sellers:
In Cold Blood by Truman Capote
Humboldt's Gift by Saul Bellows
Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail in '72 by Hunter S Thompson
Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pyhchon
A Good Man is Hard to Find by Flannery O'Connor
A Fan's Notes by Frederick Exley
The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne
A Light in August by William Faulkner
Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azar Nafisi

Yeah, I laughed when I saw Bridget Jones' Diary on there. That's TOTALLY on the same level as Lolita. Hah.

Adding your inclusions to my "must read" list!
