I agree with the advice you've already gotten. As long as you approach this person in a constructive manner, your employee should be fine with correcting the problem. Don't worry about seeming like you're spying, you're just doing your job. Make sure to let them know that they can ask you any questions if they need help.

That's about it. Just be friendly and constructive and you'll do fine as a manager.

Personally, I think it's all about learning by doing when you don't feel up to something, but have to do it, as it seems to be the case with you. You will probably "grow" manager abilities with time with you not even noticing.

As to your question itself.... I think being polite / friendly, but determined and very clear about what you think the problem is, is the best solution. No one likes a boss who isn't able to tell you what's wrong. It's easier to live with critique like this. The longer you'll wait for it to be said, the more emotionally difficult it will be, for both persons involved.
