You know how we always say that fic is ancient? That Vergil wrote fic, and Shakespeare, and Milton, etc.? Well, basically it's my opinion that if you read Iliad 5 and 6 without being blinded by the idea that it's CANON -- and given the idea that Homer in general is the writing down of an oral tradition, that comes easier -- it obviously has the fic nature.
Consider the shape of the story. Akhilleus has gone off in his sulk, and things are supposed to go badly for the Akhaians. But do they? No! Diomedes steps up and things go better than ever. We even get a scene of the Trojans saying in so many words, "We're more afraid of Diomedes now than we ever were of Akhilleus."
Diomedes steals Akhilleus's best line: δυστήνων δέ τε παῖδες ἐμῷ μένει ἀντιόωσιν. Before Akhilleus even gets a chance to say it!
Akhilleus fights the river god. Diomedes gets to wound Ares himself (with Athene as his charioteer) and send him whimpering back to Olympos. I mean, honestly.

Fellow Trekkie over here! :) Would you like to be friends? (although I should probably mention now that English is not my native language, so they may or may not be some you/you're etc confusions in my journal..)
