Try to shoot in RAW, (bigger file but better). When using JPEG every tim you open it, you loose detail. Upload in Bridge and save in TIFF. Play with your HIstogram, and play a bit with the lighting and Kelvin.
There is a good book that we use in Digital Photo 1 "Real World Digital Photography" (2nd Edition) by Katrin Eismann Peachpit Press.
Koshka looks like a proper little prince, I love Pumpkin's attitude, Lola is a princess and Petunia looks just like a sweetie--her biggest concern seems to be taking a nap and getting cuddled!
BTW--I love my Nikon (the older D70 model). You won't regret it!!!
