Why do we even need an "other?"

The first reason for the "other" (and I admit it's not a fantastic one) is to give the Big East champion an automatic tie-in. Currently under the BCS rules, the Big East champ has an automatic berth in the BCS but does not have a bowl that it goes to by default. The second reason is that with only four high-level bowls, only two at-large spots exist, after the champs from the Big Six are given slots. I'm in favor of opening up the field a little more so the WAC, MAC, and the like can have a shot at a nice payday.

If you argue we don't need it, why don't we just go back to the polls and let the bowl sponsors invite who they want?If there were a lot more independents, I wouldn't have a problem with this. But it's nice to have a reward-structure for teams that do well. Otherwise, a team that isn't a National program despite being in a BCS conference might get overlooked for one of its bretheren. If, in a given season, Illinois finished with a record of 10-2 and Michigan with 8-4, but Michigan was ( ... )
