My Dad has decided to watch Akira for this first time.

Me: "are you sure? It's pretty...insane. I've never even watched all the way through myself"

Him: "It's a cartoon!"

"So?"

"Scooby Doo's a cartoon!"

This will end well.

And speaking as one who never cared much for AKIRA, but has a healthy love of animation in all its forms... I greatly look forward to how this turns out.

The verdict: apparently he didn't watch it all the way through, but found it "strange...and violent". Says he'll finish watching it another time.

And to be fair to my dad, he does know that there's more to animation than Hanna-Barbera stuff, but he knows that I like cartoons quite a bit, and he'd rather tease me about that. :P

Out of curiosity, did you ever read the Akira manga? I find it's much better, (and more comprehensible) than the movie.

Of course it's fine! Remember the scene where Kaneda and Tetsuo unmask the swamp monster only to find it's Old Man Jenkins trying to scare people away from the mine shaft with hidden gold, and then Tesuo is all like, "RUH ROH!"

I love that movie.

I tried watching it in high school, got as far as the GIANT STUFFED ANIMALS VOMITING MILK WHAT and turned it off. I'll have to try watching it again, maybe with subtitles, since the dub is more grating than I remember. I did read the manga though, and thought it was good.
