Back story: Born in Ottoman Syria, to the Turkish Haluk Inan Bey, district administrator of Syria Vilayet, and his first wife Zada, a Syrian. Ashraf grew into a bright and serious adolescent, and his father thought he might find advancement with the governor of Syrian Vilayet, Duman Aykut Pasha Wali.
