It's cold, and I'm cold and wet... but it's quiet...
The dorms proved to be far loud for Shikamaru's purposes, forcing the usually lazy boy out into the night. Sure, there were no clouds to observe, but it was better than grasping at sleep inside, only to have it constantly torn away by the loud cries of his peers through the hallway.
It was peaceful, and the snow crunching beneath his feet became something of a comforting beat, helping him stay aware and to resist the childish urge to lay right down in the snow.
It's so perfect out here... so clean... ... except for one thing. That black huddle ahead in the snow. Shikamaru couldn't imagine who else would be out in this cold at this time of night. The boy's curiosity won out, and he moved at an unhurried pace in the black spot's general direction.
Sai peered over at the person coming closer, eyes perhaps more thinned than usual. He was vaguely enjoying himself, messing up the flat snow. Now somebody was coming over his way, and he wasn't sure if he liked this or not.
Scratch that, he didn't. He didn't have friends for a reason. He didn't deal well with people.
"Hello," he called to the approaching Shikamaru, his grotesquely cheerful smile settling onto his lips. "First year."
Shikamaru didn't bother answering the older boys thinly veiled insult, frowning slightly at the sight of the disturbed snow beneath his feet. The character for "snow" was carved carefully into the white surface, marring the otherwise perfect ground immediately surrounding it.
Another weirdo on campus, though in a school full of ninja, I suppose it's to be expected.
Using the toe of his shoe, Shikamaru aimed a kick at a small clump of snow, effectively sending the small pile showering over the other boys mark, blurring it.
Sai's face remained the same when Shikamaru messed up his psuedo-spontaneous artwork. Possibly because it did not, in fact, particularly bother him.
He just continued smiling his little smile, staring Shikamaru down. "You should return a greeting when someone gives you one. I hear it's the polite thing to do."

I'm going that way anyway...
