Tutorial - Yuna's "BabyDoll"

Feb 13, 2007 16:54

A tutorial requested by my friend Siiy
How to make this icon:

Difficulty : Very easy
Program : Photoshop CS / 7.0 / CS2

We will be making this:

into this:

in just 6 steps o-o

Step 1:
First scale down and place the icon. I got this weird addiction to the
character being on the sides of icons instead of in the middle, so I put Yuna to the right.
But, her face is so.. dead.. No?
Result:

Step 2:
Duplicate the layer, then put blending mode on soft light
The image gets a very nice touch to it, the shadows get darker and the lights softer.
Boring.
Result:

Step 3:
Create a new layer, put blending mode to exclusion, then fill with with #080076
T_T Omg blue..
Result:

Step 4:
Yes I know it looks bad, but it will look better now soon. Duplicate the base again, then put it on the top, and put the blending mode on hard light, soft light or overlay. What fits best for your image. I chose hard light for this image. You'll notice the blue-ishness is gone now! Then choose Filter->Blur->Glassian Blur, somewhere around 3. The image is a little more enchanted now, isn't it?
Still boring though.
Result:

Step 5:
Time to add a texture for the "from above" feeling. We're gonna add this texture from Tsukicon! Put the layer blending on screen. Now rotate it 90 degrees CCW, and use the eraser to remove the "shining" from Yuna's face and hair.
A little too.. mushy XD
Result:

Step 6:
I thought the icon was slightly too soft, so I wanted to add texture, a rough one, more specifically, this texture from Tsukicon, again(fantastic textures, check it out)! Put it on Soft light, then erase the part on the texture thats on her face.
Woohoo XD
Result:

Now you're finished! Of course, you can add brushes and stuff on the finished result, as I used a brush that said 'Babydoll', since I think it fits Yuna, but thats all up to you.

I used the same method on a Roxas image, and just added a brush. Result:

If you got any questions - go ahead and ask :3

You'll find more of Tsukicon's rough textures(chaos) & angelic-like textures(twilight) here.

And now I'm off to take a shower since I smell like burnt wood - damn those school trips "out in the wild".

XD Hope this tutorial helped!

- Oh, and PLEASE, post your results xD I'd love to see them
