Mr. Freakonomics missed a major point with his article on locavores. The locavore concept does not entail preparing / growing everything yourself; rather, it emphasizes sourcing what you do eat from within a certain radius of where you live. On a related note: yesterday, the New Zealand media all went nuts over the fact that food prices had risen 1% in a month. This, they proclaimed, was mostly driven by a rise in the price of vegetables (tomates rising 27% in a month!) but somewhat mitigated by some fruits dropping (kiwifruit, for instance, halving in price.)

The rest of us call this phenomenon "seasonality".
