Back to the basics...

Sep 14, 2005 17:27

I'm really humbled by the work of some photographers I've seen (RisingSun.net, FredMiranda.com). I feel compelled to get back to the basics of picture composition. At Dragon*Con I felt rushed to get shots most of the time that I didn't 'focus' on the elements involved. Time to start taking pictures regularly, if not daily, at least several times a ( Read more... )

I keep telling myself that I will rise earlier and go snap stuff in the rising sunlight. But I never do. And I don't profess to have any talent. I'd just like to practise more...

I think there are a few people with natural talent, but the rest of us must practice :)

Taking out the trash this morning, I noticed the rays of morning light through the trees. As I drove in, I looked for a good spot to take a picture but couldn't find any. Tomorrow perhaps I'll stop by our local state park/national forest...

I'm thinking that the distraction that is our group probably kept you from being able to completely focus on the picture at hand. We are like a traveling circus....

Hah. Actually the group inspired most of my better shots... It's just the rest of the 24,900 people that I had a problem with ;-D

How do you learn photography (apart from spending money taking classes)? I love to take pictures of things that I see, and people have told me that I take really good pictures. All I do, though, is to hold the camera until the picture shows what I see when I'm looking at the scene, and then click to take the picture.
It's kind of uncanny, really... my father told me that he "had no idea" that the area we live in was quite that beautiful. All I did, though, was to take pictures of what I saw and have always seen. I always think that my area is full of beautiful places!
Aside from a little experimentation here and there with my lil 2 megapixel (I think) camera, though, I have no clue about photography.
I'm still trying to accurately capture snowfall. :) I did it once... I keep trying...

For me, since I have no formal artistic training, I delve into websites with tips, read books on exposure, composition, and the like, view online photoblog galleries of photographers I like, and visit forums like FredMiranda.com. I am also involved with the Photo Club here at work, where I am learning that I have a lot to learn.

Oooo, snowfall would be a hard thing to capture, but I imagine it would be fun trying, especially those large, fluffy flakes :)

Yeah, I hear you! After several years, my mental memory is good for buildings and urban photography, now I need to work on people. That isn't easy, especially when you work in black and white which requires a lot better eye for lighting.

I find that B&W composition takes away having to worry about color as much and lets you focus on the emotive aspect of a person. Granted, I have a lot to learn about people photography. I have a strong proclivity to take only candid pictures. Posed pictures tend to lose a bit of emotion unless that person is a good actor or a method-poser.
