Sucker for a pretty voice...

I admit, I have a thing for voices, especially female. They don't have to be the Hollywood/Broadway ideals - I did grow up listening to broken English spoken with a southern Japanese (a.k.a Okinawan) accent. But I'd much rather hear a woman sing than a man (Gregorian or NeoKhuzdul/Maori chants notwithstanding).

My favorite female vocalists:

Strangely, I grew up on 70's and 80's rock and 80's electro-pop. Though I've loved Enya from the first time I heard her...

I'm a singer! I've been meaning to post some clips from my senior recital for my flist to listen to one of these days. I hope you'll enjoy them. ;)

And you picked some great female voices there for your hall of fame. I love Tori Amos, as you probably already guessed.

With a username like hymnia and a CofC background, I'm not surprised. :) I'd love to hear your recital clips!

I love Tori Amos too as a great all-around musician (writer, pianist, singer).

She does have a great voice, though it seems almost too powerful for her face, where does it come from? :) I'm not the biggest fan of operatic voices, I must admit.

She is definitely gorgeous!

Most of my friends love Jewel's voice.

Having been in choirs before (days of the past, alas), I'm more interested in technical quality than any particular tone. Also probably well tied-in to my love of musicals in general.

Although I'm a sucker for certain accents. Spoken or sung, they'll get me everytime.

What do you like in a voice specifically? What makes you think one is better than another?

I like Jewel (Dido, and the like), but they're more of my 'second-tier' voices.

I tend to like the ethereal, haunting resonance in a voice. That's not the only quality, but the main one. Other qualities I like include sultry-ness, softness, and clarity (not all in the same voice, of course...)

I don't think I've heard Nightwish. I'll definitely check them out when I have some headphones (using a public access point at the moment).
