EMINEM: Into The Labyrinth And Out Of Control
Frank Kogan, The Village Voice, Pazz & Jop 2000 Supplement, February 14-20, 2001

I think gays genuinely give Eminem the creeps, but I also note that in the oft-quoted song where he seems to be saying that he kills fags and lezzes, the oft-quoters leave out the beginning, where he makes clear that he's not ( Read more... )

Author wrestles with title koganbot September 21 2021, 01:40:43 UTC
This was originally part of my Pazz & Jop comments for 2000; Pazz & Jop editor Robert Christgau decided to excerpt and print the Eminem bit and he helped me make it better. The title I supplied with it was "In the Labyrinth," which when I look at it now is as dead and boring as leftover spinach; anyhow, someone at the Voice changed it to "Open the Trapdoor Eminem: Out-of-Control Asshole Escapes Into the Labyrinth," which incensed me at the time because it misrepresents the piece and I wrote Bob an angry email about it; now I think "In the Labyrinth" misrepresents the piece even more because it's dead spinach and the piece is better than that. So what I've come up with here breathes some life back into the vegetable, I hope: "Into The Labyrinth And Out Of Control" But honestly, "Out-Of-Control Asshole" has a zing that's missing from what I've just put, but I don't want to call Eminem an asshole because he isn't and I don't want to capitulate to those who think he is, and I want my title to try to tell the truth - though obviously "out- ( ... )

Out-of-control New Times vandalizes old Voice koganbot September 21 2021, 01:52:51 UTC
As far as I know this piece (a long comment, really, that when excerpted became an "essay") is no longer up on the Voice site. I can't find it, anyway, and haven't been able to for years. If you can, let me know, and I'll have to apologize for what I'm about to say. But sometime after the New Times jerks took over the Voice (they took over in late 2005 but took a while to institute their cost-cutting and stunted taste, and certainly not all of them were jerks and maybe none were full-time jerks and they had their reasons and keeping magazines viable was getting harder, but...)... sometime after New Times took over the Voice, a lot* from the old Pazz & Jop sections disappeared from the Website; maybe this was stupidity, maybe it was malice, maybe it was incompetence, maybe there was some reason I don't know. Maybe someone just pushed the wrong button. Feels like vandalism to me.

*A couple years ago, with New Times long gone, the Voice re-upped Xgau's essay for P&J 2000. Don't know who's maintaining the Voice site now or how they get ( ... )

It's definitely not on the Voice site -- do you have the Wayback link?
