Where "Galaxy," naturally enough, means "Italo" (Top Singles, First Third 2019)

Was going to use the title "Trap Hegemony And The Italotrot Question" because I knew it would make Chuck Eddy smile; but I decided "Where 'Galaxy,' naturally enough, means 'Italo'"* was funnier, though maybe David Frazer will be the only one to smile. David's the person who came up with the genre title "Italotrot" to describe Hong Jinyoung's "Love ( Read more... )

Freestyle and Italodisco koganbot June 3 2019, 21:23:09 UTC
I'm always worried that I'm not making sense to the reader who doesn't have the least idea what I mean by - for instance - "freestyle" and "Italodisco" (among hundreds of other terms and names and cross references that make criticism unintelligible). Rather than try to explain everything - I'm just not up for it today - I'll link a few examples here, some vintage 1980s-early '90s freestyle tracks. I'm not putting any Italodisco tracks, since the Rocket 101 song I embedded in the post really is a great example of generic Italodisco. Italodisco has similar riffs to freestyle but doesn't pile them atop one another as much and doesn't go as wild with the beats or as heart-rending in the vocals. (And despite the excellent term "Italotrot" that we're affixing to Hong Jinyoung's "Love Tonight," its riff is the sort that could happily grace many a freestyle track.) Anyway, I hope these help:

New York:

Cover Girls "Inside Outside"

Judy Torres "Come Into My Arms"

Cynthia "Change On Me"

Lisette Melendez "A Day In My Life (Without You)"Miami ( ... )

This new fromis_9 B-side sounds Italodisco-ish and perhaps even a bit freestyle-ish.

After listening a few times it started to sound oddly familiar, and i've now realised that it sounds like a faster version of C'mon C'mon by Crayon Pop -- or Vroom Vroom, which you declared to be Italodisco.

Love Rumpumpum was composedby "Anchor, Park Ki Tae, 백곰 (Bumzu), 백구". I wonder if any of them had a hand in those two Crayon Pop songs.

Way seems to be trying to make a living through her YouTube channel koganbot July 2 2019, 08:02:03 UTC
Speaking of Crayon Pop, Asian Boss just posted an interview with Way: seems the members of Crayon Pop were subjected to the same rules and bullshit that many other idol performers are, though she doesn't sound resentful in the least about it - just is happy not to be living under it anymore. I suspect there were a bunch of intricacies and nuances in the personal/personnel relationships that she only hints at: she describes getting kicked out and then asked back, this occurring several times; says same thing happened to other members.

I wish the interviewer had been interested in asking how the group's artistry came about.

In the meantime Way seems to be going full guns over the last month on her YouTube channel, averaging a new video every other day. I haven't had a chance to look; perhaps she provides info about where the artistry came from and gives us more detail about life at Chrome Entertainment.

When I get my wits together I'll try to weave some thoughts about Crayon Pop into a discussion with belecrivain and subdee elsewhere on this ( ... )

Asian Junkie has a post about Way's interview and her own YouTube channel, which has several Q&A videos.

Russian idol LANA debuted to the outrage of international fans who think that white people should not become K-Pop idols.
