"I've never been referred to as 'cold steel' and I certainly don't hate it"

Brie Larson just won "Best Actress In A Drama" at the Golden Globes. I haven't seen the movie,* but this makes me happy because she'd impressed me a lot as a writer and singer back in the teenpop days; I'd subscribed to her semi-fanzine and regularly read her witty MySpace. She was personable and very smart in an interview by my buddy David Cooper ( Read more... )

I had not connected the dots here previously. Will have to go and do a retrospective.

I need to do the same: know little of her acting or what she's been doing in the last nine years. Way back when, I saw Hoot, thought her role didn't allow for her to do much. I saw a short where she was a babysitter. I remember the album as scattershot, but haven't listened for years. She was 14, and I don't think she was given a lot of control. Her biggest impact on me was her prose; unfortunately, MySpace destroyed its past.

I should do some searches when I get the chance. Let me know what you discover.

Yeah, I think the real turn was "Short Term 12" from a few years ago -- though her actual breakout as an actress was probably her role on "The United States of Tara," which I've only seen one episode of. Clearly she made the most of limited circumstances in her early career.

Mike Saunders might have copies of a bunch of her MySpace stuff -- I know he was a big MySpacer and archived a ton of stuff (not just hers) before it went under.

I wish there was some equivalent of a MySpace now, because back in 2007, she was talking about working with Harry Maslin, the "Station to Station" co-producer, and I'd like to hear her reflections on Bowie's impact on her life, since that seems to be making the rounds. (Bowie had very little impact on my life, really, except as inspiration to other people I like. I think I technically own a Bowie alb, but I just never really explored his career.)

Some equivalent of MySpace for Brie Larson, that is, not generally. (There are plenty of alternatives.)

She's also front-runner for the Oscar now, which is very exciting!

The two songs she had on her Myspace in 2006 - "Stilts and the Titanic" and "Coming Around" were both excellent. Both better than anything on her actual album, in my opinion.

A little digging shows that "Coming Around" was on the soundtrack to "Hoot". I don't see any indication that "Stilts and the Titanic" had any sort of official release.
