I'll repost my comment from over there:

"Shopping is a kind of entertainment for us. The rich go to Paris and London, the way you did. But even people who can’t afford to travel can shop for entertainment, now, at places like this dotted all over the country.”

Though it applies more to shopping malls than to strip malls, I think. Strip malls are like mini Main Streets where you get all your essentials, in sprawled-out towns that don't have Main Streets?
