I use first person quite a lot. I have only ever been given paid music writing on the strength of my blog, where obviously I use it all the time, so unless I'm told not to I carry it over.
On Pitchfork in particular I use it to undermine rather than bolster my authority. I want the reader to be aware they're reading, not the 'voice of Pitchfork', but a thirtysomething English guy who works in market research.
(The latter is also the reason I deliberately put business jargon into my pieces - the Guardian edited "unit sales" out of the column last Friday.)
