Another Year In America October 15, 2009

Let's take a look over at Britain, for a second. Says our pal Wikipedia, "Chipmunk also makes a reference to The Saturdays in ['Oopsy Daisy'] with the line 'And now I feel like The Saturdays are all week, cos me and my heart got crazy issues'. The song reached number one on the UK Singles Chart on 11 October 2009, coincidentally beating The Saturdays who charted at #2 with 'Forever Is Over'." Yeah, and it's a strange day when Chipmunk sounds like yesterday's mush in comparison to The Saturdays, but that's how it is overseas. Here, we've got a new number one ourselves, "Down" going down a spot, the second time in two weeks that a new artist takes over, after half a year of otherwise. And it's a long-time charmer/recent delinquent who does it for us. But does she do it for us? Check under the cut to see.

Britney Spears "3": Right, the Britty Thing is in GooGoo baby voice this time, as infantile and catchy as "LoveGame." Catchier, even, and I guess this is a follow-up to "If You Seek Amy," too. We taught you to spell, we'll teach you to count! And it's creepier than the under-the-skin creepy crawlies of Blackout, though not half as interesting. But almost as good, even if I feel like a chump for liking it. TICK.

Other fun facts from the Wiki: "'3' is also the shortest title of a song ever reaching number one in the chart." A mark that won't be easy to beat, I imagine. (But according to my mp3 player, "...Baby One More Time" precedes it alphabetically.)

I think I hate the world, and myself for being part of it.

Justin Bieber "One Less Lonely Girl": In the context of all this sugar slime, regular old puppy-love sounds like maturity. Unfortunately, this time it also sounds kinda boring and rote, though I think that Bieber's a long-run talent based not just on "One Time" but also on how he has a nice breeze and a skip on this one, despite the so-so material. BORDERLINE NONTICK.

Glee Cast "It's My Life/Confessions, Pt. II": I'm told by Josh (the only person I know who's ventured an opinion) that this stuff works in the context of the show, at least the first episode's music. In any event, I don't have a TV, and this isn't working in the context of my life. "It's My Life" is the first Glee Cast track that's actually bearable, the song being so pretty, though the performance doesn't get near the karaoke barrier. NO TICK.

Glee Cast "Halo/Walking On Sunshine": So, is like Glee Cast the Special Olympics of music? I thought "Walking On Sunshine" would do an "It's My Life" and get across on the prettiness of the song, but no, this is treacle. However, the "Halo" part, well, I won't say it slams (the singers' enthusiasm doesn't overcome their lack of expressive skills), but I liked it enough to listen twice, while never having been all that enthusiastic about the original - which I underrated. I'd ticked it, but gave all the credit to Beyoncé's edginess, rather than the songwriting. My apologies to Tedder and Bogart. NO TICK.

Lower reaches watch: "I Can't Transform You" by Chris Brown, f. Lil Wayne and Swizz Beatz, enters the chart at 52.
