Every single time I watch this movie, I hold my breath and hope that Uncas won't get killed by Magua. I still can't watch that whole scene. The look in Uncas' eyes when he realises that he's been defeated ....
Every time I watch it, I hope that Alice doesn't jump this time - that Hawk-Eye will reach her in time this time.
It's just such an amazing scene, the background, the music .... the look on poor Alice's face. She doesn't do a lot in the movie but in her final moments when she's standing on the edge staring at Magua, her face is absolutely haunting and tragic.
Magua holds out his hand to her to try to get her to come to him. His hand is still stained with the blood of Uncas.
This is a wonderful movie and this is a wonderful scene. I remember when I first saw it at the cinema, I saw it with Mama Koala and my brother. My mother's normally quite matter of fact about movies, she doesn't get all affected and sappy like I do, but after this one she felt so sorry for Chingachgook. She said: "I feel so sorry for the poor father."
I'm laughing at myself because I just remembered how I always hope they won't get discovered as they hide behind the waterfalls :)
Video of the scene is here:
The trailer is here. Daniel Day Lewis has never looked hotter than he has in this movie - and I've never really liked Madeleine Stowe in anything else.
