World Cup, apologies, being jinxed, barracking, icons and canon

How funny. Yesterday, I mentioned that I had to hear constant replays of China's most popular soccer commentator positively howling with glee over Australia's defeat and I included a sound clip of his screaming. Stephen has just sent me an article about how the commentator has been forced to apologise for his outburst of pro-Italy bias during the ( Read more... )

koala's evil jinx, phrases in chinese, once a thief, world cup, icons, shows i have loved and lost, being aussie, stupid thoughts, randomness

Poor thing!!... you don't have to apologize... it wasn't you, it was our luck! lol! (or the way we are, as some others may say)... I'm just sorry you lost both your teams :(

It's nice to read that the commentator apologized... sometimes is the easier and the most polite thing to do and it's good to see that he mended his way ;)

I think I'll keep this entry because I found that vocabulary of Aussie words really interesting and useful (for the next time I visit Australia ;))

Truly, I am cursed. It's starting to frighten me. :P Yes, I have lost both my teams so I'm out of the office sweep as well! I'm glad you found the vocab useful. The problem with a lot of the Aussie slang lists out there is that they don't tell you which ones are archaic and which ones people actually use these days. It's like how NO Australia would ever say 'put another shrimp on the barbie' except as a joke :P

Awww! You're so sweet! You aren't a jinx at all... it's just the World Cup Curse of the Spanish team... They never get past the quarter-finals, and most of the times they don't even get to the quarter-finals! Such is life! :)

I love when you speak about Australian English!! It's fascinating! I guess thal also in Australia depending on where you are the accent is also different; for instance, I live in Madrid and my accent is totally different from the way people speak in Granada...

Don't try and make me feel better. I know I'm jinxed - and not just in terms of sporting teams. :)

The Australian accent doesn't vary too much. The only variations tend to be rural vs urban. Our 'BBC' English is called 'ABC English' and it tends to be the more educated accent. Some Queenslanders have a slightly broader accent than Southerners but in general it's not easy to tell where an Australian is form based on their accent. The country is too young and to interconnected to have developed different accents. I heard that the only difference is that (I think) people in South Australia pronounce castle as 'cassel' rather than 'car-sel' :)

teams for which I barrack for openly, lost - hence poor Australia and now poor Spain -

I share your guilt in both cases. ;)

In fact, I told muridae_x on IM last night (we were chatting and watching the game "together") that I might have to go now and buy Argentinian and Portuguese flags, just to make sure that Germany and England win their next matches.

But I fear that TPTB would see right through me ...

Of course they would. How could you think otherwise? :) Nothing can escape The Jinx if you have it ;)

Besides, I've doomed England by drawing them in my work sweepstake. That probably outweighs any sneaky attempts at flag confusion in the jinx department.

I wonder who complained!?

Hee, I saw that SMH article too, but I had no idea the commentator had actually resigned over this. Wow.

I gotta say, the commentary here in Australia is pretty one-sided sometimes (not THAT biased, but lots of "played our hearts out", "the one that slipped away", as if us not getting a goal when we're 11-10 didn't count for anything ::hides::), but poor Australia. ::sigh::

Some of the Australian commentary is a bit over the top. Kind of cheesie but I was told by my friend who is a journalist that her husband saw hardened Australian journalists actually tearful over the loss so perhaps that's why the commentary ended up being kind of emotional :)

The resignation/termination of the commentator is getting a lot of news over here because he's very popular. To be honest, it didn't really register when I was listening to the commentary. Sure it was irritating but a commentator is not a referee - in the tennis, the commentators are frequently clearly favouring one player over the other. It doesn't really bother me because their opinion doesn't influence the outcome of the match or anything.

You're very welcome! I'm surprised it's stil such a tiny community given how many rebellious writers there are out there. I still maintain that it's more challenging to write non-canon because you need more time and effort to make it plausible! ;)
