The turtle, living in the salt, might occasionally crave the fresh water, but darn can't live there - not Live. The frog may crave the salt, but he can't migrate either.

Still, do you suppose there's room in the well for more than one frog? Or maybe the frog will meet many groovy frogs, turtles and such like hanging out around the well? Maybe the turtle will return and share some of the ocean with the frog - or a tale or two. And maybe, gazing up, the frog Does see the world as it is, a place where light shines, day and night even when our eyes are closed....Shadows come and go, but the light always returns.

Hop On, Koala!

I just had a one hour conversation with Papa Koala in which the international phone charge had at least 25 minutes spent on debating whether the frog has been villified by the Proverb PR. His point of view was that the frog should get all the information before he can make an informed decision about whether to be in the well or not. I have no problem with that and I agree with him that the frog should have maximum data in formulating the decision, but I fail to understand why the moral to the story is that the frog is narrowminded and making his judgments about the world based on limited understanding. The frog wasn't judging anyone, he was just saying that he was happy and contented. How sad it is that the essence of this proverb is taken to be a criticism of the frog!

Papa Koala said if I felt so strongly about it, I should write an alternate ending :)

In pondering the above proverb, I can't help thinking it's a shame that the proverb has to be so negative. :)

but then there are those proverbs that are wise and hopeful! we can't forget those. so there's a few that's negative and even if they are i can't help but wonder if those who came up with it were sad or depressed at the time. but the frog can still be happy in its well because the frog made it happy. reading into the proverb i can't help but think that the turtle was just showing off making the frog sad because it's like that saying 'you can't always get what you don't have'.

My thoughts seem to get more random and stupid by the day :P

and your thoughts are anything but stupid... random yes but that's what makes your posts make me wonder about things i don't normally think about :D

yayness to randomness ^__^

I also think that the turtle seemed like he was kind of showing off which bothers me. It wasn't as if he was saying: 'There's a beautiful world out there, let me show you". It was more like a nyah nyah nyah.....

yor're right. i don't see anything that says the outside is beautiful. in a way, he just sounds a bit taunting. i guess it's the way we interpret it :)

Doctor Proverbs anyone? kiaforrest June 7 2006, 06:20:38 UTC
some Dr. Who quotes from the past courtesy: drwho_wisdom

The Doctor: 'A straight line may be the shortest distance between two points, but it is by no means the most interesting.'
- 3rd Doctor, The Time Warrior

Doctor: 'I shall have to go alone of course. It's funny. They always want you to go alone when you're walking into a trap. Have you noticed that?'
- 4th Doctor, The Androids of Tara

"There are worlds out there where the sky is burning, and the sea is asleep, and the rivers dream. People made of smoke and cities made of song. Somewhere there's danger. Somewhere there's injustice. And somewhere else the tea's getting cold. Come on, Ace. We've got work to do."
- 7th Doctor (last words of the old series)Survival

There's no point in being an adult if you can't be childish once in awhile.

Waaaaaaaaaaah. *sniffle* Sorry, that speech always makes me cry.

I love the new series but I still miss the Seventh Doctor and Ace.

Oh that really is beautiful - reminds me of my Calvin & Hobbes ' starry wonder' icon :)

mm.. odd. I heard of one guy who spent all day staring at the Elle Mcpherson screen saver and going to the coast for holidays in his caravan. Ignorance is bliss - it’s not dissimilar to the Adam and Eve story - biting the apple gave them awareness of the world around them. They would have been happy if they hadn’t bitten it - not because of any other reason other than they’d have been ignorant.

Soo the question is always.. bite the apple? Or take the red pill? To an extent, the more aware you are of your world and surroundings, the more you’re condemning yourself to a life where you’ll never be TRULY happy, simply because you will ALWAYS know there’s something out there that’s..well better.

I think I am the turtle, but I at times wish I could be the frog. The frog might be humbled, but who is the turtle to shatter his ideal world? From them on the frog will never be the same or happy..

Then again, the frog started it;) It’s like a yobbo at a wedding trying to boast and impress everyone with how great he is.

I can't believe you're dissing the frog. You're letting your turtle bias win out over logic.

I didn’t diss the frog, I was merely stating that it was one of those things that if you were truly happy, you’d probably also be truly ignorant or just a really annoyingly zen kind of person.

People who know there is a big world out there will always wonder what if…
