Veronica Mars: Thoughts after glomming on season 2 plus VM Ficlet - Salvation

Jun 04, 2006 18:58

The Logan/Veronica pairing has fallen on me like a tonne of bricks all over again. *sigh* I was naughty yesterday and after doing my shopping, ignored all sms and marathoned season two Veronica Mars - episode 210 (One Angry Veronica) all the way through to the season finale 211 (Not Pictured). I am Panda Eyed and feeling slightly socially dysfunctional for ignoring my phone but am most gleeful at having rediscovered the LoVe that is Logan and Veronica. I have gone and collected a whole bunch of Veronica Mars icons I like and they are here.

What can I say? In season 1, I fell for Logan and Veronica and wrote about them obsessively for the wonderful site Logan and Veronica Online. In the whole first season there wasn't really a single bad episode. There were a couple that weren't as wonderful as the others, but even the episodes were there was no Logan/Veronica interraction or *gasp* no Logan at all, were still very well-written and riveting. Then came the cliff hanger that left me in agony...... My previous posts are here and my ravings about season 2 are below. Images are from Logan and Veronica Online - I hope that dear jerilee doesn't mind :)

Season two started, broke my heart and lost my love as it tore apart one of my favourite pairings. Then the season committed the unforgiveable sin of actually becoming boring and Logan and Veronica were kept apart for most of the time. I know the show isn't all about Logan and Veronica but the storylines and episodes themselves were actually a bit ho hum and to be honest for me, season two's Mystery definitely was not as fascinating as season one's.

I stopped watching after My Mother the Fiend and allowed myself to be lured over to Supernatural and Doctor Who, shows that never let me down.

Then towards the end of season 2, enthusiastic ravings from my friends list made coaxed back onto the LoVe train.

Don't get me wrong, season 2 is still so much weaker than season 1 and the resolution of the Big Mystery is extremely flawed. There's a good analysis of it here but given that much of what I get out of Veronica Mars is the Logan / Veronica relationship, I'm happy. I just wish that there was more of them together instead of the tiny crumbs the writers gave us.

My incoherent, panda-eyed LoVe ravings about season 2 are set out below. Visit here to download music. I particularly recommend "I hear the bells", "Sway" and "The air that I breathe". I also still adore "Momentary Thing" is from That Episode in season 1 ;)

Episode 2.01 - Normal is the Watchword

Yes they gave me Logan at the door which was who I wanted, but it was a portent of doom. These two were clearly not meant to be a happy couple and the evil meanie writers were determined to make them suffer - and to make me suffer!

The flashbacks of their summer romance were like torture because I knew they had already broken up. The break-up itself was unbearable. The only thing that got me through this (apart from the fact that this is just a show ;) is that I had read the spoilers and been prepared. I also knew that the writers know how much most of us adore the Logan/Veronica pairing so clearly this early-season obstacle meant that they'd get together eventually. Right?

Wrong. :P Read on. By the way I wrote more about it here.

Episode 2.02 - Driver Ed

More thoughts were originally here. Ho hum episode as Veronica investigates the Bus Crash Mystery. I suppose the only crumb in this episode is the moment when Veronica leaves Duncan's room (after having had Boring, Underwhelming, the Earth didn't even blink let alone move sex with him unfortunately) and encounters Logan. It's awkward, the tension's crackling and just that moment between the two of them is more potent than the whole sex scene with Duncan. :P

Episode 2.03 - Cheaty Cheaty Bang Bang

More thoughts were here. Veronica confronts Logan about his fling with Mrs. Casablancas. It's just a case, but it's also personal..... It was a mere crumb but it was a Love moment albeit little.

Episode 2.04 - Green-Eyed Monster

More thoughts were here. Alas, only one key scene in which Veronica and Logan snark at one another. It's the usual, she accuses him, he knows he's being accused ("My day is complete. Veronica Mars has accused me of evil"), he denies and then he suddenly remembers something that might be of relevance to her.

Episode 2.05 - Blast from the Past

More thoughts were here. Mostly a Jackie / Wallace episode and not a very great moment for LoVe fans given the drunken/stoned Logan/Jackie make-out scene at the end :P

I stopped writing commentaries after this episode although I continued watching.

Episode 2.06 - Rat Saw God

Not very LoVely and I began to feel anxiety that my beautiful show was going to the dogs. Things looked very bleak for Logan. First of all he was arrested, then he was reunited with his father in a fascinating but no doubt painful scene.

The only cute thing I suppose is the final scene when Veronica thinks Duncan's lying on the sofa, goes to lie on top of him and discovers that it is Logan. *choke* Very cute :)
Logan: It’s the sweater, isn’t it? Chicks can’t resist argyle.
Veronica: Please let go of me!
Logan: Ever the tease.

Cute fic here based on the above scene.

Episode 2.07 - Nobody Puts Baby in a Corner

LoVe crumbs. Logan walks in on a V/D make out session, Logan asks Veronica for help but the two of them are still very much with other people and Veronica is very much all about Duncan unfortunately. Still there's always this quip from Logan:

"Honestly, how much easier would your life be if you were indifferent to me?"

Episode 2.08 - Ahoy Mateys!

I felt a flicker of hope in this episode. Veronica and Logan were working together again. Problem was, Veronica wasn't entirely focussed, which is why Logan says: "Yes. And he wanted me to tell you to give me your undivided attention. Pretend for a moment that your dog's life is at stake."

Nonetheless, Veronica investigates, they're on a stakeout together of sorts .... my Logan/Veronica radar goes boing boing boing as Logan shows up to rescue her. Points deducted for carrying a gun, but many points re-added for being there for Veronica yet again. I also love the fact that Veronica's crying, Logan's looking helpless and wanting to comfort her but in the midst of her !emo tears she's stressing about him and the fact that he's carrying a gun and that he is going to get himself killed. Guh.

Then she ruins it by saying: "Given your "situation," you should just move out of Neptune".

*sigh*

Alas, this episode was a bit of a red herring for LoVe fans in the sense that it made me think that perhaps My Show was coming back but it really wasn't :P

Episode 2.09 - My Mother, the Fiend

No Love in this episode. As Air Supply say, "I'm all outta LoVe, what am I without you?" After this episode, I turned my back on Veronica Mars and began watching other series, thinking: "At least I'll always have season one".

Still, I suppose there was still this exchange:
Weevil: I thought you killed Felix.
Logan: I didn't.
Weevil: Yeah, I pretty much know that now.
Logan: Well, are you waiting for the music to swell before you start the apology?

Episode 2.10 - One Angry Veronica

Season 2 was now long-finished, my friends list went nuts during the latter part of season 2 so I decided I would try again.

Alas, no LoVe in this episode either as Veronica is called up for jury duty.

Episode 2.11 - Donut Run

Veronica and Duncan finally break up and I'm dancing around the room singing hallelujah. I mean honestly, did they seriously expect me to be sad that The Most Boring Couple in THE WORLD broke up?

There's also a scene with Veronica and Logan snarking at one another in an elevator which has more chemistry than anything VD ever had :P I know, I sound so bitter but look what they done to my show, ma!

Episode 2.12 - Rashard And Wallace Go To White Castle

OK not so much LoVe but Weevil and Logan as reluctant conspirators are always wonderful so I enjoyed this episode quite a bit.

Episode 2.13 - Ain't No Magic Mountain High Enough

My LoVe radar goes boing and I find a crumb as Logan buys a slushy from Veronica and there is cute banter, but then I deflate as he goes and picks up the pretty Hannah. *sigh*
Veronica: Slushies! Get your ice-cold frozen ... sugar water.
Logan: (watching Veronica for a little bit with a smile on his face) You had me at ice cold.
Veronica: What's your poison?
Logan: Ah, emotionally unavailable women. (Looks at list of flavors.) Let's see, uh, I want something that suits my mood.
Veronica: Ooh, I'm sorry, we're all out of liquid evil.
Logan: I'll take two of whatever will turn my tongue blue.
Veronica: Hot date?
Logan: Rain check? (Veronica glares) Night with the fellas, you know how it is.

Episode 2.14 - Versatile Toppings

My heart is breaking as Logan plays the bastard and romances Hannah with ulterior motives. I might have dozed off during this episode.

Episode 2.15 - The Quick and the Wed

More koala heartache as Logan continues to romance Hannah (my OTP has more obstacles than you can point a stick at) but ..... I receive the teeniest and tiniest of crumbs in this episode.
Veronica: Toying with a sweet little girl's heart just to screw with her dad? I get it. San Quentin isn't quite as enticing as, say, college, but damn -- you've really plumbed new depths, Logan.
Logan: (Touching Veronica's nose as he passes, smiling and beaming.) You're cute when you're jealous.

Then there was this:
"You never know what true love's gonna find you".

"If it comes looking for me, I'll be over by the espresso machine," Veronica says sceptically.

Who should walk in but Logan? :) I sit up abruptly and start to wake up again from my semi-comatose state. The first crumb might have been microscopic but the second crumb was a decent size and could be seen with the naked human eye! ;)

Episode 2.16 - The Rapes of Graff

Not many crumbs for me here. They do discuss Logan's love life briefly, but it's all about Hannah. Maybe Veronica's jealous, maybe she's just being nosy. Nonetheless, the story is quite interesting in this one and there is the return of Icky Troy whom I love to hate.

Episode 2.17 - Plan B

Beautiful Logan/Veronica snarkage as he 'wins' the essay writing contest. I never enjoy anything so much as these two arguing with one another. Is that sick of me? :)

Only Logan can say: "God you're a pest" and make it sound like an endearment :) As usual, even when he doesn't want to be helpful, as he walks away from Veronica he still has to give her some information ... Also, as I've read elsewhere, the two of them are so in sync with their repartee and even their key catching. Logan tosses his keys in the air and Veronica snatches them with ease. Then she tosses them back at him and he catches them. OK for a season sparse of Logan/Veronica crumbs, that totally counts as foreplay! ;)

Love the Logan and Veronica stake out and the bad boy high five. Hee! They are so cute.
Logan: So this is staking out, huh? It looks sexier in the movies.
Veronica: Did you hear anything from Hannah?
Logan: Does deafening silence count?
Veronica: You know, I'm not sure, but I think when they start shipping your girlfriends off you're officially a bad boy.

Veronica holds up her hand for a high five and crazily enough, Logan obliges. Hee!

Logan: Her dad and your dad should get together and go bowling.

And then ... and then ...... Veronica saves Logan from saying something mean about Gia by taking his arm and pulling him up for a dance..... *guh*

*melt into goo* These two are just so darned adorable together. I just wish that Veronica didn't have that English royalty hairdo ;)
Gia: I think you use sarcasm and anger as a way to keep people from getting too close to you.
Logan: You know, I do. But it doesn't always work.

Veronica approaches from behind and hears the conversation, immediately noticing Logan's hostility and sarcasm. Gia is clueless.

Gia: Tell me what you think about me. Seriously. Be completely honest.

Yikes no. Veronica (and us) watch as Logan is about to unleash his most snarky self. Before he can speak, Veronica grabs his arm and his hand.

Veronica: Dance with me.

Logan lets her pull him off the chair and I melt into a puddle of goo.

Logan: Oh.

Veronica and Logan go out onto the dancefloor. What I love here is that you can see Logan doesn't expect that she's actually going to dance with him. Presumably he assumed she was just going to pull him to his feet to save Gia from him and then walk off on him. The 'oh' is so disarming, as is his next line.

Logan: When I dreamed of this moment, "I've Had the Time of My Life" was always playing. Well, what can you do.

The two of them are so adorable together. Veronica is now clearly wondering whether she was insane and what on earth possessed her. She looks uncomfortable and awkward as Logan is staring down at her and no one stares like Logan ..... Then they move into each other's arms and dance slowly and they're not saying anything but it is a very wonderful moment.

Episode 2.18 - I Am God

There is Cuteness in his episode. Logan standing at his open locker going through a book. Veronica comes up behind him and taps at the back of his knee with her leg. When he swings around to stare at her, she slaps her hand on her forehead:
Veronica: Yep! I have no idea what compelled me to do that.
Logan: Is it because you're five?
Veronica: I'm a little punchy; I haven't been sleeping.
Logan: Thoughts of me? Hey, I get it. Um, sometimes I'm up all night just thinking about myself.

Hee!!!! They discuss serious things but then Logan is obnoxious again and the cuteness continues and concludes:
Veronica rolls her eyes.
Veronica: Remind me. Why did we break up?
Logan: Well you thought the other guy had greener grass.

Veronica walks off on him.

Logan: Mm, or was it something about me being too much man? No, wait, it was you. You were too much man.

Veronica doesn't look back but I'm giggling because they are so playful together. When Duncan and Veronica were cutesie I wanted to hurl but Logan and Veronica being cutesy makes me giggle like a loon :)

I also have to say that I thought it was hilarious the way that Logan shoehorns their earlier makeout session into his recounting of the tale of Lucky when really it isn't that relevant. He's clearly dwelling on it with much enjoyment whereas Veronica is looking exasperated.

I also love the Wallace and Logan bonding in this episode. Things like:
"I could rub your head for luck".

"You could try!"

Then when Wallace says:
"So, I know why I'm trying to help out Veronica. I want her to get to go to Stanford. Why you doing it?"

"I don't know, not for Veronica".

"Then what?"

"Uh, the spirit of competition".

Yeah right! Who are you trying to kid, Logan? We know that it's because you loooooooooove her Logan. I can almost forgive you for Kendall and I almost forgive you for Hannah. Just admit that it's Veronica you love, ok? :)

Episode 2.19 - Nevermind the Buttocks

*sigh* Only one Logan / Veronica scene here - when Veronica questions Logan in the parking lot but it is a very funny scene filled with Logan's snarky comments about hot blondes and obligingly giving Veronica of all of his details of his love life.

Episode 2.20 - Look Who's Stalking

Veronica asks Logan about Duncan's sex life.
Veronica: Hey, how’s it goin’?
Logan: Oh, this is gonna be good.
Veronica: What?
Logan: Ah, you have that "I’d rather be making out with a broken bottle" look. Which if history serves, means you’re about to say something awkward.
Veronica: This?

Veronica points to her face.

Veronica: This is my "I’d rather be spelunking" look. It’s like you don’t know me at all.

Actually, Logan does know her and very well. Better than anyone else. I also love the way he asks her to the Alterna Prom. You can tell that he really wants her there, that when she mentions how they might never see each other again, it really affects him. :'(

*sigh* Then we get to the The Heartbreaking LoVe moment of the season. I'd read some of the spoilers but to be honest, I hadn't really expected it the way it was.
It's the Alterna Prom. A pretty wasted Logan watches Veronica who is alone.

Logan: Alone again.

Veronica: Naturally.

Logan: I, uh, I know the feeling.

Veronica: You? Host of the greatest private replacement prom ever?

Logan gives one of his faintly wry smiles, takes another drink and runs his hand through his hair in that characteristic move of his which means that he's feeling a lot more than he wants to let on.

Veronica: I'm sure you could have your pick of the bimbos.

As Veronica listens to the music, Logan is watching her. That's kind of a redundant observation. When Veronica's in the room, Logan's always watching her - just like she's always watching him. It's always been like that.

Veronica: I really like this song.

Veronica is making small talk to try to lighten the moment. She sits back on the table as does Logan.

Logan: You know, I'm surprised, Veronica. And as a keen observer of the human condition, I thought you saw through people better than that.

Veronica looks at Logan in a puzzled fashion.

Logan: Bimbos? That's not me anymore.

Veronica: So what are you like now?

Logan: You know. Tortured. Ever since I had my heart broke.

Veronica: Hannah really did do a number on you, huh?

Logan: Come on, you know I'm not talking about Hannah.

Logan's giving Veronica one of his intense stares ..... Veronica looked completely flabbergasted as she realises that he's talking about her and no one else. I wonder why it surprises her so much because her feelings about Logan have always been very strong as well.

Logan: I thought our story was epic, you know? You and me.

Veronica: Epic how?

Logan: Spanning years and continents. Lives ruined, bloodshed, epic.

Despite the self-mockery in his voice, he's still staring at Veronica and you can tell he means everything. Veronica's frozen.

Logan: But summer's almost here. And we won't see each other at all. Then you'll leave town then...it's over.

Veronica: Logan...

Logan: I'm sorry. About last summer.

Logan looks so upset.

Logan: You know, if I could do it over...

Logan moves closer to her. It's true, last summer he was completely f*cked up and screwed in the head. Self-destructive. He wasn't in the right frame of mind to be in a relationship. Then he went through the destructive force that was Kendall. I think it was only after he met someone like Hannah that he sort of started to come around again and realise a few home truths. I don't think he ever really loved Hannah, but I think he liked her a lot and she made him wake up.

Veronica: Come on. Ruined lives, bloodshed? You really think a relationship should be that hard?

Logan: No one writes songs about the ones that come easy.

Logan moves closer to Veronica again and even though the room's crowded, they only care about each other. They're just staring. Although Veronica tries to look away she keeps returning to look at him again. Logan leans in. Gah and of course Veronica can't handle it.

Veronica: I have to go. I have to go.

Veronica does a runner, Logan stares after her with his heart in his eyes and I go boohoo because I know exactly what comes next because I've read all the spoilers :P

The next morning ......
Veronica walks out of the lift and heads towards Logan's suite looking very apprehensive. A shirtless, groggy Logan answers the door.

Logan: Hello.

Veronica: First let me say that I'm sorry for running out last night like I did. I was a bit overwhelmed; I needed to collect my thoughts, think about what you said.

Logan looks kind of bewildered but Veronica wants to say what she has to say.

Logan: Veronica...

Veronica: Look, let me just get this out. I don't want to lose you from my life either. And I'm not saying I'm ready to dive back into anything, but after graduation, let's make it a point to see each other. See where that takes us. I remember what you said about our relationship being epic.

When Veronica finally realises that Logan is looking blank, she realises he doesn't remember?

Veronica: ...Oh, God.

Logan: Last night was kind of a blur.

Kendall: [from inside the room] Is that our room service?

Veronica and Logan both look completely undone and then Kendall appears in a bathrobe behind Logan.

Kendall: No. Just Veronica Mars. What a disappointment. Come on. Let's get you cleaned up. Bye, Veronica.

As Kendall goes back into the room, a tearful Veronica tries to smile.

Logan: Look, whatever I said, I...

Veronica walks away, shaking her head and Logan steps into the hallway after her and I'm scowling because those writers are evil that they keep doing this to my OTP.

Logan: You should know--

Veronica: Stop.

Veronica gets into the lift, Logan's staring at her, he's staring at him, her face is twisted in pain, his face is filled with shock, I'm still scowling at the evilness of the writers.

I mean what was that? Was Logan so torn up after Veronica ran off that he called Kendall for comfort? Did she call him when he was in need of comfort? Did she crash the party? What was with that? I hate soap operas so why am I so torn up? Gah. :)

Episode 2.21 - Happy Go Lucky

Alas, only one Logan/Veronica moment here, although it was introduced with this cute line: "After a week of forced smiles and the occasional "hey," it's time for business as usual. Ain't epic love grand?" Yes Veronica, mock it as much as you want but this is love, it is epic and it is very grand.

Episode 2.22 - Not Pictures

Ah the season finale ..... I'll discuss the non-Logan/Veronica stuff first. First of all, Weevil broke my heart. Sheriff Lamb is a jerk. I know a lot of people think he redeemed himself in Nobody Puts Baby in a Corner, but he really is a jerk ..... I could see him as a non-canon pairing possibility with Veronica if 1. he wasn't stupid; 2. he wasn't incompetent. He's just deeply crap at his job and worse, he looks like Greg Kinnear :P

Much Logan/Veronica goodness but not enough for me! :) It almost but not quite compensates for the LoVe drought that was season 2.

Logan immediately coming to the rescue when he receives the sms on his mobile phone. I'm confused though - why wasn't it caller ID? From which phone did Veronica send the message? If it was Beaver's or Veronica's - both numbers should have been on Logan's phone.

The expression on Logan's face when Veronica tells him that she was raped by Cassidy.

"You're not a killer, Veronica. Give me the gun....." Logan knows he has to save Veronica from herself.

The way these two hold each other. A platonic hug from these two sizzles up the screen more than a whole Duncan/Veronica sex scene :P

Then Veronica rushes down to take care of Mac, Logan on her heels. He's not going to let her get hurt again. See him standing in the background watching out for her?

And then this.... gah..... echoes of the early scenes in episode one of season two, except that now it's a psychologically battered Veronica lying down:

Veronica wakes up, smelling bacon, thinks she's going to see Daddy Mars but instead it's Logan:

Ahem. I'm so shallow. I wouldn't be that unhappy if I woke up and Logan was frying bacon for me. I mean come on, look to his left - he's just made her a pile of pancakes. He can cook! *koala melts into a pile of ooey gooiness*

Then he goes away and leaves her to have her moment with Daddy Mars - he's so considerate :'(

Then later, he comes around to pick her up to drive her to the airport. Such a nice and normal thing to do.

Forget that porcine block of wood known as Duncan, Veronica. He's happy in Mollymook and will probably marry an Aussie girl and forget all about you. I had to laugh about the fact that instead of running to Mexico or Brazil, Duncan runs to Mollymook, Australia. Is that like the most obscure, weird place in the world that the writers could think of? I know at least three people including my brother who have been to Mollymook! :)

And then.... guh... the kissing. Happy, gleeful, squeeful, light-hearted and merry kissing ....
Logan: I'm not gonna see you for a whole week. That's like a month.

Veronica: Yeah, but then I'll be back and everything will be fine.

Even Kendall's interruption was hilarious as it led to Logan's snarky: "Yeah, I didn't know you could come out during daylight hours".

Hee! I also love this image of the two of them:

Conclusion. We know that Veronica Mars has been renewed for a third season. What is Kendall up to? What was in her suitcase? What is so important that it could lead to Keith not showing up at the airport? What new obstacles will be thrown in the way of poor Logan and Veronica???? When did Beaver go from looking like the Poor Man's Elijah Wood to looking like the Poor Man's Jonathan Rhys Meyers with eyeliner? How long do symptoms of chlamydia take to show up? Why did it take so long for Veronica to see a doctor? Does this mean Veronica infected Duncan? Was there possibly any kind of altruism on the part of Beaver in not wanting to sleep with Mac? Perhaps he didn't want to infect her?

I don't have the answers to any of the questions posed by the season two finale, but the finale made me want to write a fic.

I don't usually write Veronica Mars fan fic and have only written 2 before. One was True Colors [sic] (yes I hate misspelling 'colours', it makes me crazy!) that was set during Russkie Business. The second was Exposure that was set after the season 1 finale. So here is my third attempt at a Veronica Mars fic.

Title: Salvation
Characters: Logan/Veronica (of course!)
Rating: PG (they're just talking but they refer to adult themes)
Spoilers: Seasons 1 and 2. Just a few missing scenes from the season two finale and after.

"Ssh. Just keep still," he said softly.

He sat on the sofa, motionless. Veronica lay across his thighs, her body completely limp and vulnerable. Her eyes were closed.

A tiny sob escaped her throat. Her hand that was lying on her thigh twitched convulsively and Logan let his fingers stroke the smooth skin at her wrist with the lightest of touches. "Close your eyes. Don't think about it. I'm here," he told her.

She was like a broken doll, her breathing ragged. He had held her that night as she had sobbed. She had sobbed until she had collapsed limply as if there was no spirit left in her and her body had been almost weightless in his arms.

Logan had caught her and carried her to his car, strapping her in and driven her home wordlessly. When he had glanced over at her, she had said nothing, the tears streaking down her face silently.

She had protested half-heartedly as he had carried her into the apartment. "Be quiet, Veronica," he had told her and she had fallen silent, her head lolling against his arm and he had felt the dampness of tears.

He sat there watching over her, aware that their positions had been reversed last time except that it had been his battered and bleeding body lying in her arms on that same sofa.

Although there were no visible marks on her body, it was clear she was in pain, from the way the tears continued to slide from beneath her closed lids. Her whole body was screaming with sorrow and there was nothing that he could do for her except to be there.

"Logan ..."

"Don't try and talk. You talk too much, Veronica. For once just shut up and be quiet," he told her roughly, his tone at odds with the gentleness of his hands as they smoothed her hair from her face.

He didn't want to touch her because he wanted her too much and what he craved from her was the last thing she needed at that moment.

Veronica felt the touch of his fingers brushing the tears from her face and she thought back on the night. The memories were jumbled together in an overwhelming fashion .... trembling in terror as Cassidy had confronted her, feeling comfort in Logan's arms, the protective way he had held her and how safe she had felt.

She wondered if she had been selfish by calling him to her and putting his in life in danger. She shivered slightly.

Logan noticed immediately. "You're cold, I'll get a blanket for you," He made a move as if to rise but Veronica clutched his hand convulsively.

"No. Don't go. I'm fine," she whispered. "I was just remembering ..."

"I told you to stop thinking about it," he said firmly. "You're exhausted ... try to rest ...."

"You came for me, Logan," she said biting back a sob.

He was silent.

"You always come for me," she whispered. Impetuous, hot-headed, he was always coming to her rescue without considering the danger to his own safety.

"You asked for my help ... I'm always going to come for you," he said quietly.

"It's not the first time you've saved me," she said in a choked voice. "The Camelot. The River Stix. Tonight".

"What can I say? I'm a creature of habit. It's kind of flattering the things you do to try to get my attention - only you would go to such lengths, Veronica Mars," he said with a crooked smile. "Next time just take off your clothes, that'll be enough of an attention-grabber".

Veronica didn't laugh but her her breathing became more regular as she took a deep breath and allowed herself to concentrate on the sound of Logan's voice.

"Besides, you saved me, too. Tonight. Generally," he told her and she felt his lips brushing lightly across her mouth. Before she could respond, he had drawn back. "Is your friend Mac going to be all right?" He asked her seriously.

Veronica's eyes opened and she stared up into his dark eyes steadily.

"She really liked him ...." Veronica said sadly. "Crazy thing is, I thought he liked her, too ...."

"He did, in his own screwed up Beaver way," Logan said with that twist to his mouth that she knew so well. In the end, it had been Logan who had interrupted the crying session between the two girls by finding clothes for Mac to wear. It had been Logan who had told the hotel staff to wait outside the room as he had held up a blanket behind which Mac could dress. He had watched as a trembling Veronica had tried to comfort her distraught friend but in the end, his overriding concern for Veronica had forced him to intervene and insist on taking her home.

"Why didn't you let me kill him?" Veronica demanded. "He deserved it". Despite her words, there was no accusation in her voice, just a sense of exhausted hopelessness.

Logan brushed her hair from her face. "I told you why. You're not a killer. I know you, Veronica Mars. If you'd killed him - you would never have been able to live with yourself". Logan's voice was blunt. "Now close your eyes .... I'm not going anywhere....."

His phone rang and he answered it. "Yeah," he said briefly, his eyes not moving from Veronica's face. Veronica watched a muscle move in his jaw.

"When?" she heard him ask. "I see. I can't come right now, but I'll be there soon," he said firmly. "When I get there". A note of bitterness entered his voice. "I'll ID him in the morning. It's not like he's going anywhere". He swallowed hard and then continued. "Thanks for letting me know".

"Logan?" she asked him after he hung up.

"Just rest, Veronica," he told her gently. "Even warrior women need to rest and the salvation of the world can wait for one night". He sat there watching over her until she fell asleep. Even as he drifted off into an uneasy sleep, he kept her steady, ignoring his own discomfort as he held her.

***

"I wonder what Kendall wanted," Veronica said with a frown as Logan started up the engine after stowing her luggage.

Logan shrugged with disinterest. "What she always wants. Money. Want to go back and protect your father's virtue from her assault?" he asked her quizzically and smiled as Veronica hit him lightly in the arm.

As he drove she glanced at him. She had gone with him to identify his father's body. He hadn't wanted her to come but he found it hard to say no to her, so she'd had her way and stood beside him, holding his hand tightly in hers. She had buried her face in his arm as he had nodded tersely when the sheet had been pulled back from his father's face.

"That's my old man," he had said without a flicker of emotion on his pale face as his dark eyes rested on his Aaron Echolls' quiet, dead visage. He'd never seen the man look so peaceful before.

"Logan I'm so sorry," Veronica had whispered.

"You and me both," he said with a bitter smile. He had pulled her against him and ushered her from the morgue, more concerned about her state of mind than his own.

Trina had made it back for the funeral. There was no way she could possibly have missed a photo opportunity and a chance for publicity like that. To her credit though, she had appeared genuinely upset and Logan had put aside his bitterness momentarily to hold his weeping sister as their father was buried.

"You all right?" Veronica asked him finally when they were waiting at a set of red lights. Logan nodded.

"Never better," he told her and it was the truth. "The important question is whether you're all right?"

Veronica thought for a moment, testing the pain the way a person would test a tooth. Sometimes it seemed like things would never be all right again. She had thought she had allowed herself to heal from the rape at Shelley Pomroy's party and suddenly the agony was back again, fresh and raw as if it had taken place the day before.

"You know ..."

"Yeah?" she asked him.

His hands tightened on the steering wheel and she stared at him, reaching out her hand to run her fingers over his and he caught her hand in his.

"If you want to go to counselling or .... therapy or whatever it is .... I'll go with you ...." he told her. "Hold your hand and do that whole support thing .... If you want".

Veronica smiled at that and realised that despite everything that had happened, she really was okay. "I'm touched, Logan. But you know - I just can't imagine you in a touchy feely place like that".

Logan raised her hand to his mouth and held it there, his eyes dark and serious as he listened to her.

"You, my dad, Wallace .... you're all I need. I don't need to talk about it with anyone else," she told him and Logan nodded.

At the airport, they had held onto one another as if they couldn't let go.

"I'm so sorry," she had whispered.

"Sorry? What are you talking about now?" he had demanded, his mouth seeking hers.

"Just sorry...for everything," she had said thickly, kissing him and then pulling back. "For all the things I've done and said ... and all the things I didn't do and say but should have ...."

"Crazy as always," he had said laughing softly as he kissed her again.

"I wish you could come with me," she had whispered.

"No... the Mars family needs some quality together time. You know that".

"But I don't want you to be alone".

Logan had shaken his head. "Me? Alone? No sweat. Besides, like you said - then you'll be back and everything will be fine," he quoted her words back at her with a gentle smile in his eyes.

Logan was standing by the water, staring out at the horizon when his phone rang.

A faintly puzzled look crossed his face but he smiled as he recognised the number.

"I'm flattered that you miss me already," he said teasingly, his voice a caress.

"Logan ..." Just the sound of his name was enough.

"Veronica, what's wrong?" He frowned as he realised the time. "Shouldn't you be boarding soon?"

"That's just it. We've missed the final boarding call..... my dad hasn't showed up yet....." There was anxiety in her voice and Logan was already walking back to his car and opening the door.

"Logan?" Veronica asked.

"Yeah. I heard you," he said as he slide into the driver's seat. "I'm coming to get you".
