The "Scandinavian" Language?
I was just at fanfiction.net and found the following interesting note:
FanFiction.Net is phasing out the "Scandinavian" language. Technically, the term is of a region which encompass several similar but distinct languages. As result, we have added 4 new languages to our list:
Swedish
Norwegian
Finnish
Danish
If you currently have entries archived as "Scandinavian", please move them to the proper language and help us spread the word.

Reminds me of all the jokes we used to make about being experts in "The Asian Culture" and knowing "The Asian Language". When we asked our help desk to install complex Chinese characters on our computers, they told us they would be installing The Asian Language shortly on our computers. I had no idea whether we would get Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese or Korean.
Then there were the large number of queries I used to receive in Hong Kong in relation to PRC or Taiwanese matters - "It's all the same isn't it?" Or the number of people who tell me Cantonese and Mandarin are the same aren't they? When I moved to HK, even HSBC in Australia, sent me a form and the woman told me in an apologetic voice: "Sorry but it's got those Hong Kong Language Characters". "You mean Chinese characters?" When I moved to Hong Kong, people were always asking me how things were in Singapore or asking me whether I spoke Japanese ......... When I first told The Firm I studied Mandarin and wanted to use it, they offered to send me to Thailand, then to Port Moresby ...... finally HK seemed about as close as I was going to get.
Then again, the above seems funny to me but I will freely admit I would not be able to distinguish between Serbian and Croatian ..... I have no clue about one African dialect from another ...... Even after I started teaching myself Japanese, I still find it hard to distinguish between Korean and Japanese sometimes. I guess it just seemed funny to see a line about the "Scandinavian Language" :)
