Game of Thrones: The King in the North scene from the season 6 finale (pic spam) (spoilers)

I've watched the 'King in the North' sequence from the Game of Thrones season six finale "The Winds of Winter" many, many times now. At first it was because of Lady Lyanna Mormant ( my new favourite character in the show) alone, but now I realise that I also love it because it's the first time in the series that I actually find myself liking the ( Read more... )

See, I watched one or two episodes in Season 1, and then decided the show was way too gruesome for me and stopped. Also read part of the first book, and stopped, basically for the same reason. Also, there didn’t seem to be any characters I could root for. I liked Catelyn Stark a great deal, right up until she decided to kick her stepson out of the house. Oh, and tell him she wished it had been him who’d fallen and been paralyzed, and not her own son. Not that I found her stepson a particularly compelling character in his own right (in fact, I kept on mixing up Robb and Jon, because they were around the same age, not because they looked particularly alike). I just objected to her treatment of Jon on principle ( ... )

Season 1 is kind of bad ... I really struggled with it. It's like they tried to be as gruesome, lurid, anti-women as possible just to get the shock value across. I also hated the books when I first read them but as the seasons progress, a lot of the earlier things get flipped and by the time you get to season 6, you'll see that a lot of angry men are accusing Game of Thrones directors of being SJWs who are just all about women :) In the later seasons, you'll see some impressive stuff from
- Arya Stark
- Brienne of Tarth
- Yarra Greyjoy
- Lyana Mormont
- Margaery Tyrrell (the Dormer character)
- Daenerys although I still don't much character for her

Some of the men are impressive, too as Jaime goes through an interesting journey as does Jon Snow ... season 5 has one of the scariest 'zombie' attack sequences I've seen but it's also surrounded with storytelling and context so it's extra amazing. I'd really encourage trying to get back into them and overlooking some of the more sensational/gratuitous elements of the show! :)

Dammit, I thought I had replied to this comment, then realized I still had the tab open in my browser a week later, and hadn't actually gotten around to the reply. Sorry.

Thank you for your thoughtful and detailed response. LOL at the misogynistic viewers accusing the show runners of being secret social justice warriors. The ultimate sin! I already pretty much know what happens in Season 1, and couldn't get into it when it was first airing. Would you suggest starting with Season 2?

Maybe skip a few episodes in to see how you go? In a way it's good to see everything get set up - why things are awful/bad - why people are the way they are so that when the later seasons build on it, it makes more sense. You should just do what I do and cover your eyes for the gory/gratuitous bits - and believe me, i do that a lot! :D
