Packing stresses

Aug 11, 2009 08:35

We got up this morning at 7am - after having gone to bed at way past 3am. The reason? I have no idea why, but I was convinced the removalists were coming on Wednesday. It wasn't until 1.30am that the Canadian said: "Hmm, are you sure they're not coming on Tuesday?" My heart sank when I realised he was right so we ran around like headless chickens ( Read more... )

Moving is stressful but when you're moving between countries, it's positively evil, I know. I remember moving to Canada with my heart in my throat. And taking a delivery of furniture when my parents downsized wasn't a picnic, either.

You have my sympathies, having all the extra bureaucracy and the unknown elements of timing confounding matters for you. How long is it expected to take before your stuff arrives in Australia?

I will keep my fingers crossed for you!

Our stuff was supposed to arrive in September but now with the delay it won't get here until October - fortunately in the interim we've been able to borrow a lot of stuff from Mama Koala so that we don't end up with duplicates of everything!

Wow i get the shakes just looking at your post. I still haven't completely recovered from our move from CA to TX two years ago (still find myself saying "do you know if ___ made the move?" ) I hate moving so much. The three days after all our stuff was gone was... surreal is the only word I can come up with . We went to movies and tried to spend as little time in our house as possible.

My opinion is you can never have enough converse. I have 4 pair :p

On the one hand moving is getting a little easier for me - I moved once from Canberra to Sydney, then once when in Sydney, then in Sydney to Hong Kong then once in Hong Kong, then I moved from Hong Kong to Beijing and then once in Beijing on the other hand, I find it awfully wearying. That being said, the Canadian laughed at me because the removalists do most of the packing for us but it's just the mental exercise of identifying:
- what do you want to keep and what do you want to throw away/give away?
- what do you want to bring as carry on luggage, what will get shipped and come several months later?

Argh - each time I move I swear to myself that I'm going to stop buying things, that I'm going to stop saving souvenirs etc etc but I'm really bad at keeping such promises :)

You are being SO brave ... really, especially in view of all those stuffed toy eyes Watching You ... Reminds me of 'I can't - I can't go back in the box!' from ToyStory2

I hope that your move goes well and that it's non-traumatic as it possibly can be given the circumstances

We just completed our move across from Perth to Melbourne - the movers came through and delivered everything yesterday, and we've got four or five boxes left to unpack (I hate boxes, so I unpack fast). I was so glad we got movers to do heaps of the work for us, it was so much less stressful! (it was still stressful)

I felt really embarrassed by all of our stuffed toys. I love them and would never part from them, but the movers were making fun of me and them and it made me feel awkward. :o(

I hope the rest of your move goes okay.

Yes! Even with someone else packing for us, I still feel stressed about it. Also it's always hard to find everything because it gets packed all over the place!

No one laughed at our stuffed toys but in China, stuffed toys are pretty common :D I don't think anyone would think they were out of the ordinary, heh heh.
