Heee.. I don't know why fire escape doors are locked. In the building that I was working in it was the same way too, and it was bothersome since the company occupied 2 consecutive floors. Going up and down 1 level relied on the slow lifts, heh :(
Heh heh you have identified my plight exactly. People keep telling me to carry my mobile/blackberry everywhere I go, even when going to the bathroom but that seems so wrong! :D Also I know lots of people who have lost their mobiles/blackberries by leaving them behind in the bathrooms! It's a dilemma.
I felt for you getting locked in the fire escape. Earlier this year I got stuck in the lift in my apartment building. I'm not claustrophobic either, but after the emergency and alarm buttons didn't work and the lights went out, I was terrified. ;-) It was only after about 30 minutes when the lift started working again that I got out!
30 minutes? OK I was only stuck 5 minutes and felt very anxious - admittedly I was kind of busting, but that's neither here nor there. Thank goodness you were let out. I don't know what I'd do if I got stuck in a lift!
I know that in Korea they think the cold affects your bones. After you have a baby they claim your bones are especially weak so you aren't supposed to open the fridge, drink or eat anything cold and you are supposed to bundle up and sweat for the days immediately following birth or the cold will hurt your bones. Certainly made it interesting for me having a baby there and not wanting to sweat it out!
Good grief. There are such strange beliefs everywhere. There isn't even consistency in Asia about the cold water thing so I think it might just be a Chinese quirk
