Lip syncing at the Olympics

There's much outrage in China right now over the decision to select 9 year old 林妙可 Lin Miao Ke for her looks over 7 year old 楊沛宜 Yang Pei Yi, although 楊沛宜 Yang Pei Yi's voice was used.

There is no doubt that 林妙可 Lin Miao Ke is absolutely adorable. I thought so on the night.

I guess it's a real shame that the voice we heard was not actually hers. Rather, it was little 楊沛宜 Yang Pei Yi's voice. 楊沛宜 Yang Pei Yi's was dumped from the role because she wasn't as pretty - her face was too round and her teeth were uneven.

First of all I'm horrified that they couldn't just let the actual singer perform at the ceremony. Secondly, I'm as horrified by the Western media's headlines about the situation like "Olympic singing star dumped for 'cuter' girl", "China bans child singer with crooked teeth" or "Chinese child singer 'too ugly' for Olympic ceremony".

I sure hope that 楊沛宜 Yang Pei Yi can't read English. It must already be upsetting enough for her to have been dumped from the ceremony, but to also have everyone scrutinise her face and call her ugly must be mortifying. Particular as she's not the least bit ugly - she's a cute, little, normal-looking Chinese girl who happens to have a round face and crooked teeth. I also feel sorry for 林妙可 Lin Miao Ke because she's probably suffering humiliation and backlash over something that was definitely not within her control.

Last of all, I'm horrified by the media going to interview the little girls to ask how they feel about it :P

Audrey Hepburn was dubbed over without her knowledge in My Fair Lady, but I don't think anyone ever wrote headlines that called Marnie Nixon too ugly to be the leading lady :P

on crack, china wtf, prc, beijing olympics
