Jonathan Crane knocked on his patient's door, but didn't wait for a response before entering the room - the knock was merely a warning, not a request.

He had a notepad in hand, ready to record their session, and smiled as he greeted her. "Hello, Nadine."

"I strongly suggest that you try, Nadine. I don't think anyone will be pleased if you don't." He frowned at her, the hint of disapproval growing stronger. "Are you trying to make the child feel inadequate? Are you telling me you'd prefer to have her taken from you?"

"That's why the girl takes care of her," Nadine murmured, shutting her eyes. She wanted to put the child down, she wanted to put the girl back in her crib and scurry away. "She's better at it... knows what to do. She can take care of her."

"She is not the child's mother. I assure you, the child understands far more than you give her credit for. Are you hoping to make her resent you?" He had to admit, he was enjoying this, despite his stern exterior. "Are you trying to make me angry?"

"I don't know what to do with her." Nadine trembled more, looking down at the girl again. She couldn't bear those blue eyes looking up at her. Tears welled in her eyes and she shut her eyes again, shaking her head. "I-- I can't take care of her. I can't. I don't-- I can't."

"You can," he said, coldly, "and you will. Believe me, Nadine, you won't like the alternative."

Removing his glasses, he folded them and tucked them into his suit pocket, "In fact, I think you're overdue for a taste of what my disapproval might entail. Is that what you want? If so, you may hand her to me, and I'll remove her from the room."

Holding his hands out, he waited for her decision.

Nadine quivered even more violently. When he held out his arms for the baby, she made a sudden movement back, holding the girl close to herself-- a strangely protective gesture. She knew-- knew what he was talking about. She knew that if he left with the child... he'd send that thing in after her.

She looked down at the girl again, doing her best to smile. She didn't really manage it, a few tears escaping even as she tried, but-- Dear God, if she didn't, it would come, and she couldn't bear that.

"That's better." Crane sat down and picked up his pen again. "I expect certain things of this child, nothing short of extraordinary. It would be a great shame if some external factors were to necessitate her disposal, if some lack of nurturing caused her some irrevocable defect. We'd have to start over again, and continue trying until we achieved the desired results. Of course, we'd need to keep the results of your failures where we could see them, to remind you of past mistakes."

He smiled down at the child. "Poor little thing. It would be such a pity to see you on the shelves, collecting dust just because your mother wouldn't try hard enough."

Returning his gaze to Nadine, he said, "But of course, a mother would never do that to her child. We want only the best, don't we?"

Nadine set her daughter in the crib quickly, taking a few steps back at Crane's words, shaking her head violently. She drew in a harsh breath, trying not to let that thought seep into her mind. It was all she had not to scream-- start screaming and never stop.

She drew back toward the bed, shaking her head still. The girl took care of her daughter, made sure she was alright. Nadine knew she couldn't do that much herself. But the child couldn't be hurt. No matter how much she wished she could, she couldn't allow the child to be harmed. It was her child, even if it was also the child of that creature...

She couldn't take care of it, but she couldn't let harm come to it.

"Did I say you could put her down?" The subtle venom in his tone was all the emotion he allowed her to recognize. Then, his lips curled into a sneering smile, "Or is this your way of asking to be alone with me?"

A choked sob left her as she slid to her knees on the floor. She shook her head again, as violently if not more so. "She has its eyes. I can't-- I can't look at her long." She would pay for this, she knew she would, and she gave a cry as she thought about it. "I can-- can only do so much..."

"She has my eyes as well, Nadine. They're quite similar to yours, as well." He walked over to the crib and retrieved the infant. "It looks like Mother would like to speak to Father in private, little one. We'll just take you somewhere a little more quiet."

As he left the room, he turned to fix Nadine with a final stare. "I'll be back very soon. Prepare yourself." With that, the Cranes left, the child still peering at her from his shoulder.
