Admin Post: Rule Clarification and Additions

Nov 11, 2005 21:08

Hi everyone. We (your lovely moderators) have noticed an upswing in the number of posts targeting individual users, rather than the snark worthy material within those posts. This post is not directed at any particular snarkers, it is a general problem we've been discussing over the past few weeks ( Read more... )

Thank you, that issue was a little bit annoying me and I wasn't sure who to address it to.

My email address is natalieann @ livejournal.com Feel free to email me at any time with concerns. I'm generally pretty good at getting back to people, and I totally don't bite.

jessimuhkaknits has informed me, though, that I'm an evil bitch for making her post this admin post so that she'll get all the comments in email, not me. Muahahahaha. :)

Nah. I also help moderate a mailing list of over 1,000 people. I think it's really important that members let the people in charge know what's bugging them. To a certain extent, we do expect this community to police itself and most of the time, it works out pretty well.

This question is only a little bit silly, but how are you going to monitor that everyone has read the admin posts? Will there be a "test" or is it all on the honor system?

it pretty much gives us admins free reign to give the boot to anyone who obviously hasn't read them. For example, if someone makes a post along the lines of "Person X is so stupid. Stupid Stupid Stupid". I can assume they didn't read this post about no personal attacks and baninate them.

I see. Thanks for the clarification.

Thanks. I was getting uneasy with the tone of some posts, and was considering dropping the community. I'm not talking about all of the posts by a long shot, but some of them seemed a bit like we were picking on the unpopular clueless girls in high school. When something truly moronic is done, I do enjoy the snark. When we're seizing at straws or trying to find something snarkable just because a previously notorious person is posting, that's crossing a line.

I guess I'm just an optimist about human nature, but I like to assume that even the idiots start at zero until they post something snarkable - and that the counter resets to zero until they post something snarkable again.

By the same token, when I wind up snarked, I'll accept it with good grace. Ain't none of us immune. :)

I just joined about a week ago, for reading the snark factor, not necessarily participating... this is actually my FIRST comment, truth be told. Reason being, I don't feel confident enough in MY knitting skills to snark someone else's hard work, but I can definitely enjoy everyone else's snark. that's a personal preference of mine, but I generally don't see the snark-worthy posts til after they've been made here.

the reports of the day are priceless, I have to admit :) I enjoy them a lot!
