I think I want to try my first apparel item... Since it's summer and I'm impatient, I want to make something to wear now so I've decided on Knitty's "Askew". (Also, it's "mellow" so it shouldn't be too hard for a new knitter such as myself.)

My question is, however, is that if I can't find the Noro Silk Garden (45% silk, 45% kid mohair, 10% lambs ( Read more... )

Oooh... that is nice. Since I was looking to start on the project soon I probably won't order it online now, maybe I'll look for something similar in the LYS here.

I am using a cotton tencel yarn of the same weight. It is coming out beautifully and so light that i am not going to be overwhelmed by wearing it in the summer.

Perhaps something like a heathered cascade 220 would work? Noro would be way too itchy for me in a vest like that. A debbie bliss yarn would probably work really well there, too. And her yarns are really soft.

One thing you will really need to take into consideration when picking a sub, is that this pattern requires a LOT of blocking. I'm talking several inches. The silk garden is actually closer to a DK weight even though it is described as worsted, then it is soaked and stretched to fit the measurements. If the yarn you choose has no memory, this won't work. Also if you knit it up with a yarn that actually is 16sts/4in you won't have enough give to stretch it. But it is a super easy pattern to follow and I'm halfway done in 2 days.
